It’s something we’ve seen before, and will likely see again.

There’s nothing *wrong* with the short episode, “Avoid Getting Tonitrus Bolts,” but it feels a bit safe and predictable. It mainly exists to remind us how much we like Anya and Damian together, and it does that well. It would have been great to see the character of Schlag and her conflict with Anya explored in more detail, but right now she feels like a temporary obstacle. Anya and Damian’s relationship is a highlight of *Spy x Family*, and it would be nice to see that dynamic featured in a more original story.

Spy x Family’s Animation Only Cares About Loid Forger

The involvement of renowned studios CloverWorks and Wit Studio doesn’t automatically make a series the best-animated of Fall 2025. While *Spy x Family* Season 3, Episode 2 looks fantastic – as expected from these studios, with vibrant colors and smooth animation – it doesn’t really break new ground. Specifically, the episode “Avoid Getting Tonitrus Bolts” relies on the same familiar, lighthearted comedy that *Spy x Family* has always been known for. It’s enjoyable, but doesn’t offer anything particularly new for fans.

The animation in the later parts of “■■■■’s Memories” is where CloverWorks and Wit Studio truly shine. The first half of the short has the same peaceful, beautiful look as “Avoid Getting Tonitrus Bolts.” However, things become much more striking when Loid tells his first lie to his father and when bombs begin falling on the Westalian festival. At this point, clear title cards and quick cuts powerfully show Loid’s inner turmoil, making his fear and confusion especially impactful.

Season 3, Episode 2 of *Spy x Family* delivers what fans have come to expect from the series. While the episode doesn’t fully hit its stride until the second half, it’s still a solid installment. Technically, the animation and writing remain consistently high quality. This episode primarily serves as a setup for a deeper dive into Loid’s backstory, rather than being a complete story on its own. Fortunately, the next episode promises to build on this foundation and more than compensate for any weaknesses in this one.
