If you’re not a Battlefield fan, October 10th might seem like any other day. But it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find someone who isn’t excited about EA’s new game.
Battlefield 6 quickly became the most popular game on Steam yesterday. The EA servers struggled to handle all the players, suggesting the game also launched very successfully on consoles.
Many games start strong, but only the truly exceptional keep that momentum going. After its initial release, Battlefield 6 appears to be heading towards becoming one of the most successful games ever.
The Battlefield 6 Effect
Battlefield 6 quickly became incredibly popular, reaching a peak of 747,440 players within the first hour of its release yesterday, according to Steam data from SteamDB. This makes it the most popular full-priced shooting game ever, as noted by Okami13_. Only the free-to-play games PUBG and Counter-Strike 2 have had more players at their peak.
Even though the initial player numbers were great, many of us, including me, found that the game really grabbed our attention yesterday afternoon.
I accept that waiting in line is unavoidable—I’d prefer a stable game after the wait than a fast start plagued by lag. The most frustrating part, though, was the frequent errors that forced you to scan a QR code and restart your wait from the very beginning.
Despite some initial frustrations, Battlefield 6 has reached a major milestone today. As of right now, over 625,000 people are playing, with a peak of nearly 700,000 in the last 24 hours. And thankfully, most of them are actually engaged in battles – even if they aren’t always helping their teammates when they need it!
Earlier this year, EA told investors they hoped to sell 100 million copies of Battlefield 6. While we don’t have exact sales figures, the game is currently number one on Steam’s sales charts.
Now that EA is privately owned, they don’t have to report to shareholders, but this also means we don’t know much about their plans for the next Battlefield game. However, the game is currently very popular – it has a ‘Very Positive’ rating (83%) on Steam, and most players seem to be having a good time.
Players who bought the game through the EA App have had more trouble, with many unable to start playing. However, the issue has now been fixed, according to game director Vince Zampella, after some internal discussion.
Battlefield 6 is out for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
