star Andrew Garfield confirms the future of the fan-favorite feature film franchise.
Andrew Garfield recently addressed the possibility of a third *Amazing Spider-Man* movie. When asked about *The Amazing Spider-Man 3*, he confirmed it’s no longer in development and doesn’t expect it to happen, though he appreciated the enthusiasm for it. The film, which was first planned in 2016, is officially canceled.
Andrew Garfield first played Spider-Man (Peter Parker) in the 2012 film *The Amazing Spider-Man*. Directed by Marc Webb and written by James Vanderbilt, Alvin Sargent, and Steve Kloves, the movie boasted a strong cast including Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Denis Leary as her father George Stacy, Sally Field as Aunt May, Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben, and Rhys Ifans as Doctor Curt Connors, who transforms into the villain, the Lizard. The film was generally well-received by critics and earned over $758 million worldwide, despite costing $230 million to make.
The 2014 film *The Amazing Spider-Man 2* introduced several new characters, including Electro (played by Jamie Foxx), the Rhino (Paul Giamatti), and the Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn). Although the movie was financially successful like the first *Amazing Spider-Man* film, critics generally didn’t like it as much. Combined with the arrival of Tom Holland as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, plans for sequels to *The Amazing Spider-Man* were cancelled. Luckily, fans got to see Andrew Garfield reprise his role as Spider-Man in the 2021 film *Spider-Man: No Way Home*.
What It Would Take to Bring Andrew Garfield Back as Spider-Man
Andrew Garfield expressed interest in revisiting his role as Spider-Man, but not in a typical sequel. He’s hoping for a project that’s unconventional and creatively bold, similar to the freedom seen in the animated *Spider-Verse* films. He believes the multiverse concept allows for honoring the character in unexpected and exciting ways.
It remains unknown if and when Garfield will don the Spidey suit again.
