„We’re not done yet” Machine Games still has plans for its Wolfenstein trilogy

As suggested by one of Machine Games’ founders, it appears that their Wolfenstein series isn’t quite done just yet. Recently, the team has been predominantly working on Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, an endeavor that was met with acclaim from both fans and critics when it launched last December. The game’s first major DLC expansion, The Order of the Giants, was released last week. It seems that Indiana Jones has proven to be a significant success not only for the studio but also for Microsoft, partly due to its release on PlayStation consoles earlier this year. However, it may take another year or two before we get any solid information regarding the next installment in the Wolfenstein series. Could the world be ready for more adventures in this popular franchise? Only time will tell!

Machine Games still wants to make another Wolfenstein game to complete the trilogy

As a devoted fan, I recently came across a fascinating interview featuring none other than the co-founder and studio head of Machine Games, Jens Gustafsson, delving into the intriguing lore behind the Wolfenstein trilogy. Spotted first by VideoGamesChronicle in a recent NoClip documentary, the journey of Machine Games’ Wolfenstein series began in 2014 with Wolfenstein: The New Order. The sequel, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, followed suit in 2017. Today, we’re focusing on the third installment of this captivating trilogy, although it’s important to note that Machine Games has also developed other Wolfenstein titles. The latest release, Wolfenstein: Youngblood, was launched in 2019, but it should be noted that this game is classified as a spin-off rather than an extension of the trilogy. If you’re keen to delve deeper into this conversation, I highly recommend checking out the full forty-minute documentary on YouTube. However, one particular moment caught my attention.

It seems that Gustafsson has been envisioning a trilogy for some time now, even as early as New Order’s planning stages: “…we have always viewed this as a trilogy. So, the journey of protagonist BJ – even during those initial weeks at id [Software], when we were plotting out New Order – we already had a plan for at least this character. What would unfold in the second one, what would happen in the third one.” Eight years have passed since The New Colossus, and Youngblood received mixed reactions from fans, making it intriguing to see how audiences will respond. Will the Wolfenstein name still retain its power?

It seems we may need a while longer before getting answers about the next Wolfenstein game. Gustafsson mentioned that they aren’t finished with the series yet, as there’s still a story left to tell. Although they’ve had ideas for this third installment, development on anything beyond concept stages doesn’t appear to have started yet. Given the lengthy development process of big-budget titles like Wolfenstein, we might not get updates for another year or two at least. This potential finale to the Machine Games Wolfenstein trilogy could thus be released a decade after its preceding part. In essence, we’ll need to stay patient and optimistic about learning more in due time.
