Epic Games Store just got a new feature that makes it easier to pre-download games.
Tim Sweeney’s store has been available for nearly seven years, but many gamers still see it as just a place to get free games, not a real rival to Steam. This is largely due to the features Epic Games Store lacks compared to the constantly improving Steam platform.
Despite previous criticisms, Epic Games is working to improve its platform. Recently, they’ve added a highly requested feature: preloading. This allows users to download game files before a game officially launches, as long as the game’s publisher enables the option (PC Gamer reports).
A small step for EGS and a lot of changes on Steam
While it seems minor compared to bigger updates like the store redesign and Steam’s new features, preloading games is really helpful these days. Even smaller games often require large downloads – 10 or 20 gigabytes isn’t uncommon. If your internet isn’t very fast, not being able to download the game ahead of time could mean waiting several days after release before you can actually play.
It’s understandable why players are happy about the new preload feature – and it’s also a bit funny to people online. Considering this platform was built to rival Steam and is backed by a large company, it took a surprisingly long time – over five years – to implement something so standard.

As we’ve noted, Valve has continued to enhance Steam with numerous improvements. Consequently, Steam now offers significantly more features than the Epic Games Store – the difference between the two platforms has actually grown. Steam is now considerably ahead of its competition.
Look, I’m glad the Epic Games Store is trying to improve, even if it’s just little by little. It’s still kinda rough around the edges – honestly, even the guy who *runs* Epic admits it’s not perfect. But hey, at least they’re trying to get closer to Steam, right?
