As a huge movie fan – and a Mario one, obviously – I’m really hyped about the sequel to *The Super Mario Bros. Movie*! It’s officially called *The Super Mario Galaxy Movie*, and honestly, I can’t wait. Everyone’s talking about Rosalina finally showing up on the big screen, and I’m totally on board with seeing an adaptation of the *Super Mario Galaxy* games. But you know what? I’m also really curious to hear what Keegan-Michael Key has to say about Toad – I loved his performance last time and want to know where his character is headed!
The upcoming Super Mario Bros. movie is launching in April, and it sounds like it’s nearly finished! Keegan-Michael Key, who voices a character in the film, recently revealed he’s already completed his recording sessions, suggesting the movie is on track for release after the 2025 movie schedule is finalized.
That’s a wrap! We’ve finished filming, and I’m really excited about it. I think it went really well. I know my publicist is around here, and they’ve reminded me I can’t say much more right now. But yes, it’s great!
Creating animation takes time, so it’s not surprising that the voice acting – including any extra recordings – was likely finished early in the production of *The Super Mario Galaxy Movie*. Despite this lengthy process, the film is coming together quickly, especially since it’s only been three years since the first movie was released.

13 New Things I Noticed Rewatching The Super Mario Bros Movie Now That It’s Streaming
Considering how successful *The Super Mario Bros. Movie* was – it made over a billion dollars! – it’s likely they started planning a sequel right away, which makes perfect sense. Most studios would definitely want to make another movie after that kind of success.
Honestly, I’m not surprised to hear Keegan-Michael Key’s finished with Toad. In the first movie, Toad felt like he was there when Luigi or Peach weren’t, mostly filling in. I don’t expect the new movie to have a huge story arc for him. Though, I’m really hoping they dive into those creepy skulls we saw and figure out what’s *inside* them – how much is actually brain and how much is just empty space? That’s what I’m excited about!
Based on the *Super Mario Galaxy* games, the new Mario movie will likely take us to far-off and unusual places. I’m really hoping for a water-based world, and it would be amazing to see Mario wearing the bumblebee suit again. Ultimately, I just want this movie to be better received than *The Super Mario Bros. Movie* was by critics – I’m hoping it doesn’t disappoint!
The highly anticipated movie, *The Super Mario Galaxy Movie*, will be released in theaters in April 2026. And for anyone new to the Mario universe – or those with a new Switch 2 console – both the game and the console are now available for purchase. While playing the games isn’t necessary to enjoy the movie, they’re definitely a lot of fun!
