Netflix Developing Hockey Series After Heated Rivalry & Off Campus Success

Netflix is stepping onto the ice.

Hockey is rapidly growing in popularity thanks to hit shows like Prime Video’s Off Campus and HBO/Crave’s Heated Rivalry. Off Campus, based on Elle Kennedy’s popular books, quickly became a streaming sensation. Heated Rivalry also gained a large following, with viewers eager for more of the series focused on queer hockey players.

Netflix has greenlit a series adaptation of the popular young adult novel Icebreaker by Hannah Grace. Amanda Lasher, who previously worked on Gossip Girl, will lead the project as showrunner. She told Tudum she’s been a longtime fan of the genre, recalling reading similar books in secret as a teenager, and is excited to be working with the author and Netflix to bring the story to life.

Anastasia Allen is a talented newcomer aiming for an Olympic gold medal, while Nate Hawkins is a popular athlete with dreams of playing in the NHL. When an unexpected accident forces their teams to practice on the same rink, sparks fly. What starts as rivalry quickly turns into a powerful attraction, and they soon discover that the desire to win is nothing compared to their growing feelings for each other.

Icebreaker is a college romance about Anastasia Allen, a figure skater determined to make it to the Olympics. Her plans get complicated when she has to share her ice rink with hockey player Nate Hawkins, and she finds herself torn between a powerful connection with him and pursuing her dreams.

Jade Bartlett, famous for her work on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, will be co-writing the project with Lasher. Bartlett also expressed her enthusiasm about the adaptation being announced.

We’ve absolutely loved working on Icebreaker, a series set in Hannah Grace’s captivating world! The characters are ambitious, talented, and incredibly attractive, but what really makes them special is their kindness and genuine goodness – we just can’t get enough of them. Hannah has built a world that feels like home, and our teams at Unwell and Netflix (along with Amanda and myself) are thrilled to bring this beloved story to life on screen.

Grace’s novel, Icebreaker, became a huge success after gaining popularity on TikTok’s BookTok, reaching the New York Times bestseller list for 70 weeks and selling over 5 million copies globally. As the first book in a planned trilogy, readers are eagerly anticipating adaptations of each installment.

Netflix has yet to reveal the cast or official release date for Icebreaker.
