5 Star Wars Villains Stronger Than Kylo Ren, Ranked

Disney had a tough challenge when making the new Star Wars trilogy: creating a villain as memorable as Darth Vader. The Force Awakens introduced Kylo Ren (originally Ben Solo), the leader of the Knights of Ren, and immediately showed his power by stopping a blaster shot in mid-air with the Force – something fans hadn’t seen before.

Kylo Ren battled many opponents – including the Praetorian Guard, his Knights of Ren, and even a Zillo beast in the comics. Despite being strong, especially after becoming Supreme Leader, he was held back by his unstable emotions and lack of training, making him less disciplined than some other Star Wars villains.

Darth Maul Channeled His Wrath Into the Dark Side of the Force

Though Darth Maul wasn’t as powerful as Darth Vader, he was a formidable enemy of the Jedi. In Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, he skillfully fought both Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi at the same time, even killing Qui-Gon. He almost defeated Obi-Wan too, but his arrogance led to his downfall – he wasted time taunting Obi-Wan instead of finishing him off when he had the opportunity.

Both Kylo Ren and Darth Maul were consumed by anger, but they expressed it differently. Kylo’s inner conflict—being pulled between the light and dark sides—made him vulnerable. Maul, however, channeled his rage into power with the Dark Side. His intense fury even allowed him to survive seemingly impossible injuries, like being cut in half and falling into a reactor core, because his desire for revenge against Obi-Wan kept him alive.

Count Dooku Was Star Wars’ Best Lightsaber Duelist

While Count Dooku, also called Darth Tyrannus, wasn’t as physically powerful as Kylo Ren, he was a much more skilled fighter with a lightsaber. He specialized in Form II, a style of lightsaber combat specifically designed to fight Jedi and Sith – which is why his lightsaber handle was uniquely shaped. In Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, Dooku defeated both Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi at the same time, and he even managed to battle Yoda to a standstill.

Kylo Ren fought with incredible power and aggression, but his lightsaber technique wasn’t very precise. He relied on big, sweeping attacks to overpower opponents with brute force. This worked well against weaker enemies, but he struggled when facing skilled duelists like Luke Skywalker. Overall, Kylo’s abilities didn’t compare to those of a truly masterful swordsman like Count Dooku.

Supreme Leader Snoke Was Kylo Ren’s Master

Similar to how Kylo Ren mirrored Darth Vader, Supreme Leader Snoke served as the new trilogy’s version of the Emperor, mentoring Kylo in the Dark Side. Snoke was created using the genetic material of Palpatine, giving him a portion of the Sith Lord’s powerful Force abilities. In Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Snoke easily dominated his opponents, even at his weakest.

Kylo killing Snoke wasn’t a sign of him being stronger. He simply caught Snoke off guard. This was similar to how Vader defeated the Emperor in Return of the Jedi – it was a surprising move, but Vader was still the weaker one.

Darth Vader Was Everything Kylo Ren Wanted to Be

Anakin Skywalker was incredibly gifted with the Force and could have been the strongest ever. Although severe injuries on Mustafar and the life-support suit he needed limited him, he still became a terrifying Sith Lord. As Darth Vader, he was the Galactic Empire’s most feared agent, responsible for the deaths of many Jedi.

Kylo Ren looked up to Darth Vader and wanted to be just as powerful and intimidating, but he never quite lived up to his grandfather’s reputation. In The Force Awakens, Rey sensed Kylo’s fear that he wouldn’t be strong enough to match Vader. Later, in The Last Jedi, Snoke cruelly told him that while he once believed Kylo could become a new Vader, he now realized Kylo was simply a weak and immature person hiding behind a mask.

Kylo Ren Was No Match For Emperor Palpatine

Emperor Palpatine stands out as the most formidable villain in the Skywalker Saga. He was an incredibly skilled manipulator who secretly engineered the collapse of the Galactic Republic. When he was ready to reveal himself, his power was undeniable – he swiftly defeated and killed several Jedi Masters like Agen Kolar, Saesee Tiin, and Kit Fisto. He even bested Mace Windu in a duel with Anakin’s assistance and drove Yoda into retreat.

We don’t need to guess who is stronger – Palpatine clearly defeated Kylo Ren in Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. Even though he was frail and barely alive, Palpatine easily overpowered both Kylo and Rey. He drained their energy, tossed Kylo into a chasm, and left Rey to fight him by herself.
