Tyra Banks Sues Netflix Over America’s Next Top Model Documentary

Tyra Banks is taking legal action against Netflix, alleging defamation related to their documentary Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model. According to reports from TMZ, Banks claims the documentary misrepresented her through biased editing of a three-hour interview. The lawsuit asserts that producers created a false and damaging narrative, falsely suggesting she knowingly allowed a contestant to be sexually assaulted, exploited the situation for viewership, and later couldn’t recall the incident. Banks also states she wasn’t aware Cycle 2 contestant Shandi Sullivan would appear in the documentary and reveal a sexual assault that occurred on the show. The lawsuit emphasizes that the documentary implies Banks has no memory of this serious event involving one of her contestants.

Imani Banks claims she wasn’t able to see the finished documentary until just before it was released on Netflix. She states that only 16 minutes of her interview made it into the film, and that the documentary inaccurately portrayed her efforts to reach out to Miss Jay Alexander after his stroke in 2022. According to her lawsuit, if producers had told Banks that the show would claim she hadn’t visited him in the hospital, she could have explained that she’d been living in Australia for two and a half years. She also says she would have provided evidence of how diligently she tried contacting Alexander personally after hearing about his stroke, including text messages from his family acknowledging they were delayed in responding to her calls and messages because their focus was on his recovery.
