The production team has achieved a major accomplishment. Director Jeff Fowler recently announced the news and also gave fans a sneak peek at Metal Sonic.
Jeff Fowler announced on X (formerly Twitter) that filming has finished for #SonicMovie4! He says the cast and crew believe they’ve made the best Sonic movie yet and are excited to share it with fans. He also shared a photo of himself with the director’s clapperboard, standing next to Metal Sonic, whose eyes glow red. While fans will have to wait to see Metal Sonic in action, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is currently scheduled for release on March 19, 2026.
Metal Sonic Makes His Debut in Sonic the Hedgehog 4
As a huge fan, I was so excited to finally see that Metal Sonic teaser! It’s amazing to think this movie has been in the works for over two years. They officially announced they were making a fourth film way back in December 2024, but filming didn’t actually start until March 2026. Now that they’ve finished shooting, I can’t wait to see what happens next with the post-production process and, eventually, the movie itself!
Not much is known about the story of the new movie yet, but reports suggest it will take inspiration from the 1993 video game . That game was famous for letting players travel through time, which changed how they experienced each level.
Like most Sonic games, Sonic CD features Sonic trying to prevent Doctor Robotnik from getting powerful Time Stones and taking over Little Planet. Good news for fans – Jim Carrey will be back to play the villain, Doctor Robotnik, in Sonic the Hedgehog 4.
I’m so excited to hear that Ben Schwartz is back as the voice of Sonic! And it’s awesome that Colleen O’Shaughnessey will continue as Tails, with Idris Elba as Knuckles and even Keanu Reeves joining us as Shadow the Hedgehog. They’ve also got someone voicing Amy Rose, the classic pink hedgehog we all love from the games.
Alongside Jim Carrey, James Marsden will be back as Tom Wachowski, Sonic’s dad, with Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone and Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski. Joining them are new cast members Richard Ayoade, Matt Berry, Nick Offerman, and Ben Kingsley, though their roles haven’t been revealed yet.
The Sonic Film Series Has Already Crossed the $1 Billion Mark
The upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 4 movie has a lot to live up to, as each film in the series has been more successful than the last. The first movie in 2020 earned over $319 million worldwide, and the second film in 2022 brought in $405 million. Most recently, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in 2024 grossed an impressive $492 million at the global box office.
Beyond doing well financially, the Sonic movies have generally been a hit with fans, and the introduction of Metal Sonic probably won’t change that. It’s still uncertain if the newest movie will be as popular as the last one—Sonic the Hedgehog 3 currently has an 86% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on over 150 reviews, and audiences love it even more, with 95% positive ratings from over 10,000 viewers.
I’m really excited – Paramount just announced that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is hitting theaters on March 19, 2027! I’ve been waiting for the next installment and can’t wait to see what adventures Sonic and his friends get up to.
