A teenager who dresses up as fictional characters (a cosplayer) was arrested in Singapore. This happened after videos surfaced showing Amos Yee, a man previously convicted of a sex offense, being physically attacked – punched, kicked, and knocked to the ground – near an anime event.
On May 9th, a disagreement occurred outside Doujin Market 2026, also called Doujima, at the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre. The event was taking place in halls 403 through 405, and police were notified of the situation around 2:15 PM.
So, I was reading the news and apparently the police in Singapore arrested an 18-year-old for causing a public disturbance. It sounds like someone, Amos Yee – I remember him as a YouTuber who had some legal trouble in the US a few years back, getting jailed for really serious stuff – got attacked, but thankfully his injuries weren’t too bad. It’s a weird situation, and I’m just trying to piece together what happened.
This is the attack from my perspective

Social media videos show a person dressed as Yuji Itadori from Jujutsu Kaisen physically attacking another person, identified as Yee, near the convention center. The videos capture the attacker punching and kicking Yee while he was on the ground, before briefly stopping. The attacker then ran back and tackled Yee from behind before someone stepped in to break it up.
Yee reported on X (formerly Twitter) that he was attacked at the anime convention, posting a picture of a cut on his lip. Before the attack, he had announced plans to go to Doujin Market, even though event organizers had apparently told him not to.
So, from my side of things, I got banned from actually going to the event because some people had issues with me being there. But I still wanted to be around the action, so I hung out in the public areas outside where everyone was queuing and stuff.
Cosplayer arrested after Amos Yee attack goes viral
Police haven’t released the name of the person they say committed the attack. But fans of anime online quickly identified the teen as a cosplayer nicknamed “kay9” – also known as John Cosplayer – who was dressed as the character Yuji Itadori at the time.

The incident gained attention beyond Singapore when fans of the anime Jujutsu Kaisen noticed similarities between the attack and a storyline from the show called the Shibuya Incident, which centers around a character named Yuji pursuing a villain. A famous line from the series, “I am you,” became a popular caption in memes created from videos of the fight.
Neo Tokyo Project, the organizers of Doujin Market, announced they canceled the ticket of an influencer with a history of causing problems and are taking steps to prevent them from attending future events. They emphasized their commitment to visitor safety while also stating they do not support violence.
In Singapore, actions that disturb the public can result in a fine of up to S$2,000. If someone intentionally creates a dangerous or annoying situation, they could face up to three months in jail, a fine of up to S$2,000, or both. Causing someone harm intentionally carries a penalty of up to three years in jail and a fine of up to S$5,000.
