Director Dean DeBlois announced on Instagram that filming for How to Train Your Dragon 2 has officially wrapped! He shared a photo hinting at a sword fight and revealed the shoot took 81 days. Now, the movie moves into post-production, with a planned release date of June 11, 2027. This is great news for fans eagerly awaiting the live-action film!

How to Train Your Dragon 2 Gets First Look & Major Filming Update

The latest How to Train Your Dragon movie is both a remake of the original and a sequel to the 2025 live-action film. Kit Young again plays Hiccup, and he’s joined by returning cast members Nico Parker, Gabriel Howell, Julian Dennison, Bronwyn James, Harry Trevaldwyn, Nick Frost, and Gerard Butler.

The next installment will introduce new characters, including Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Drago Bludvist, a cold-hearted dragon hunter with world domination in mind. Interestingly, Ólafsson has been part of the How to Train Your Dragon universe before – he voiced Ragnar the Rock in the 2019 film How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.

Brett Goldstein, known for his role in Ted Lasso, will play Eret, a confident and boastful dragon hunter. Cate Blanchett returns as Valka, Hiccup’s mother who was previously separated from her family, and the wife of Stoick (played by Butler).

Five years after the events of the first movie, How to Train Your Dragon 2 follows Hiccup, now twenty years old, as he explores new areas around Berk. During his adventures, he discovers his mother and together, along with Toothless, they must fight against the ruthless Drago to save their home.

The Live-Action How to Train Your Dragon Film Was One of 2025’s Best

I’m really excited for How to Train Your Dragon 2 coming out next year, but it has a lot to live up to! The first movie was a huge success, earning over $636 million and becoming one of the highest-grossing movies that combined live-action and animation ever. Plus, everyone loved it – critics gave it a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 77% on Rotten Tomatoes, and regular viewers like me gave it an amazing 97% based on over 10,000 reviews! I’m hoping the sequel can capture that same magic.

The first How to Train Your Dragon sequel was a big success when it came out in 2014, earning over $622 million and winning a Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature. Even now, over ten years later, fans still love the story, as shown by its 92% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 flies into cinemas on June 11, 2027.
