The popular drama Law & Order will be back for its 26th season on NBC. Since debuting in 1990, the show has become a successful franchise that continues to thrive on the network, proving it can remain a hit even with a changing cast.
Season 25 began with some challenges for ADA Maroun, as she dealt with the aftermath of the dramatic events at the end of the previous season. The cast was already reduced in size due to Mehcad Brooks’ departure after three seasons, and his replacement, David Ajala, didn’t join the show until several episodes later – around episode seven.
Eventually, the show found its footing, and Ajala’s Detective Theo Walker developed a good working relationship with Reid Scott’s Detective Vince Riley. Maura Tierney is doing a great job stepping into Camryn Manheim’s former role, and Tony Goldwyn has successfully taken over as district attorney following Sam Waterston’s departure.
Since the revival of Law & Order in 2022, the actors playing the Assistant District Attorneys – Hugh Dancy and Odelya Halevi – have been the most consistent stars. Unlike Law & Order: SVU, where Mariska Hargitay and Ice-T have each appeared in over 500 episodes, the original Law & Order has shown over its 25 seasons that its case-of-the-week format can succeed even with frequently changing actors.
Law & Order Season 26 Has Already Been Confirmed By NBC
Unlike some shows that leave viewers hanging with dramatic season-ending cliffhangers, fans of Law & Order don’t need to worry. NBC has already renewed the show for a 26th season, ensuring its continuation, and did so several weeks before the season finale aired – even after renewing SVU.
The renewal faced delays because of budget limitations and scheduling conflicts, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Lisa Katz, who heads scripted content for NBC and Peacock, explained that it was challenging to coordinate everything and “just trying to put all the pieces together.”
To make the schedule work, the drama will now air at 10 p.m. Eastern on Thursdays instead of 8 p.m. It previously opened NBC’s Thursday night lineup, but now the reality show The Traitors will lead, followed by SVU and Law & Order.
When Will Law & Order Season 26 Release?
Following the announcement that it was renewed, NBC quickly confirmed that fans wouldn’t have to wait long after the spring finale. Season 26 of Law & Order will premiere as part of the network’s fall schedule, which is expected to start in September with the new series Line of Fire, starring Peter Krause.
Although we don’t know exactly when Law & Order will be back this fall, the early premiere of Line of Fire suggests NBC might launch its entire scripted schedule in September. Typically, Law & Order returns in late September or early October. This is a safe strategy for NBC, especially compared to ABC’s decision to postpone High Potential until 2027.
Last year, the network started its fall season with a night dedicated to the Law & Order franchise. In addition to two Law & Order shows airing on NBC in primetime, season 5 of Law & Order: Organized Crime was also available for streaming on Peacock. Now that Law & Order: Organized Crime, starring Christopher Meloni, has been cancelled, a full Law & Order night is no longer happening. It will be interesting to see how the show The Traitors will be incorporated into the schedule.
What Law & Order Season 26’s Story Could Be
The 2022 revival of Law & Order has seen several cast members leave after a single season, starting with Anthony Anderson. It’s hard to know who will be back for future seasons until it’s officially announced. However, the show’s iconic opening narration always makes one thing clear: each episode will focus on both the police investigating crimes and the district attorneys who prosecute those responsible.
Since Law & Order: Organized Crime and the Law & Order revival premiered alongside SVU, the shows have consistently featured crossover events. The latest one aired in early 2026, and another two-part crossover between the original series and SVU is planned for the 2026-2027 season, assuming production hurdles can be overcome.
We’re seeing more characters move between the different Dick Wolf TV shows, like when characters from FBI and CIA appeared on CBS, and the big One Chicago event planned for 2026. Now that Organized Crime has been canceled, those characters might show up as guest stars on Law & Order, especially with season 26 taking over the 10 p.m. timeslot.
