Punisher: One Last Kill’s Dog Scene Fuels Outrage As Director Defends It’s “Vital” To MCU Special

Following a wave of surprised responses online, the director of the new Disney+ special, The Punisher: One Last Kill, is speaking out to defend a specific scene featuring a dog.

Director Reinaldo Marcus Green discussed a difficult scene in his film – the death of a dog – during an interview on The Brandon Davis Show. He admitted he debated whether to include it, even after initial test screenings. Ultimately, he decided it was essential to the story’s impact.

The director emphasized that he and Jon Bernthal, who portrays Frank Castle/The Punisher, both love animals, making the scene particularly difficult to film. He added that no one wants to see violence like that.

A disturbing scene unfolds where a group attacks a veteran who is peacefully with his dog. After the assault, one of the attackers steals the veteran’s hat and dog, and sarcastically calls him “good boy.”

While the veteran pleaded for his pet’s return, the gang member threw the dog into the path of traffic, where it was struck by a truck just out of view.

At the conclusion of The Punisher: One Last Kill, Castle returns the veteran’s hat and then kills the man who murdered the dog. According to Green, this moment needed to be impactful from the start to draw viewers in, which is why he questioned star and co-writer Jon Bernthal about including the dog’s death in the story.

Green supports the decision to include the intense scene in the final version of the show, explaining it became a key reason for Castle’s actions. He further clarified that the scene was crucial to the development of Frank’s character arc.
