Stardew Valley creator may let players cheat on partners but there would be consequences

Eric Barone, the developer behind the popular game Stardew Valley, has said he’s considering adding a feature that would allow players to have affairs with spouses in a future update.

Stardew Valley is a relaxing game where you leave behind the stress of office life to create a new home on a beautiful farm. You’ll grow plants, venture into mines, and work to restore the nearby community.

As you play, you’ll get to know the unique people living in Pelican Town, and you can even build relationships with them that lead to marriage.

After you get married, you need to get a divorce before you can marry someone else. However, the game’s creator, Eric Barone, is open to the idea of including infidelity as a possibility in the future.

Stardew Valley could add cheating but it might be “too real”

The game’s creator explained to GameInformer that while he personally doesn’t approve of players causing trouble, a good sandbox game should allow them to do so and then deal with the results.

He’s considering letting players pursue a romance with another character even while their character is married, but it’s a decision he doesn’t want players to make casually.

He explained that simply asking everyone to accept the situation wouldn’t work. It would likely make people resentful and create significant problems, leading to anger and damaging family relationships.

I’m willing to consider that, but I wouldn’t coddle anyone involved. There would be significant repercussions for any wrongdoing.

However, this doesn’t guarantee cheating will ever be added to Stardew Valley. The game’s creator is hesitant, as it could alter the relaxing and peaceful atmosphere he’s created.

Barone wondered if the game might be getting too realistic. He questioned whether Stardew Valley was meant to be a break from the stresses of real life, and if adding too much realism actually went against the game’s purpose.

Stardew Valley is still getting new updates, and the creator, Barone, is continuing to develop Haunted Chocolatier, even though it’s taking a while. He’s still dedicated to finishing that game.
