According to FlixPatrol, this movie is currently the 7th most popular on Disney+ in the U.S. It’s also gaining traction on Disney+ in countries like Costa Rica, Ecuador, Switzerland, and New Zealand, suggesting its popularity is growing before the release of the next Princess Diaries film.
The Princess Diaries Was Anne Hathaway’s Film Debut
Anne Hathaway started her acting career on the TV series Get Real, but she became widely known for her first film role as Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries. This movie, which was based on Meg Cabot’s popular 2000 novel, also featured Julie Andrews, Héctor Elizondo, Heather Matarazzo, Mandy Moore, Caroline Goodall, and Robert Schwartzman.
Mia is a typical teen who unexpectedly discovers she’s next in line to be queen of a European country, Genovia. Her grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi, begins teaching her how to rule, but Mia has to decide if she wants to accept the crown or live a normal life.
Originally, experts didn’t think The Princess Diaries, directed by Garry Marshall, would be a big success in theaters. But the Disney movie surprisingly became a hit, earning $165.3 million around the world on a $26 million budget. The film’s popularity led to a sequel, which was released in 2004.

When The Princess Diaries came out in the summer of 2001, many people thought it wouldn’t do well in theaters because it was rated G. But the movie actually had a very successful opening weekend, earning more than any other live-action G-rated film since 1996’s 101 Dalmatians – only trailing that film in opening weekend earnings.
Despite mixed reviews from critics (currently at 49% on Rotten Tomatoes), The Princess Diaries is a much-loved Disney movie, earning a 68% audience score. Fans are still hoping for a sequel after all these years.
