A fantastic, but often overlooked, anime series recently climbed to the top of the rankings, surpassing even incredibly popular franchises like Dragon Ball and Demon Slayer.
AnimeAnime recently shared the results of its survey asking fans what anime come to mind when they think of “battle anime.” While popular series like Demon Slayer, Dragon Ball, and Jujutsu Kaisen all ranked highly, they actually tied for second place – and far behind the unexpected winner, Bungo Stray Dogs.
The Top-Ranked Battle Anime According to AnimeAnime
- Bungo Stray Dogs
- Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba,Dragon Ball, Jujutsu Kaisen (tie)
- Gintama, Tougen Anki,My Hero Academia (tie)
- BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, So I’ll Max Out My Defense, Girls und Panzer, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children,Gushing Over Magical Girls,Yu Yu Hakusho,Lycoris Recoil (tie)
The recent battle anime survey had a lot of ties! Surprisingly, seven different shows all tied for fourth place. It was also unexpected to see some very popular series, like JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and Yu Yu Hakusho, not rank higher than third place.
While Jujutsu Kaisen achieved a strong second-place ranking among top anime series, it has faced recent challenges. In March, its sales fell behind those of One Piece Volume 114, which sold over 612,000 copies in just a few weeks after its release.
Even if its popularity dips slightly, Jujutsu Kaisen will likely remain popular with fans for a long time. MAPPA, the animation studio that created Jujutsu Kaisen, recently released a new installment in Japan on May 1st.
Set almost 70 years after the events of the original Jujutsu Kaisen series, Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo centers on Jujutsu Sorcerers Tsurugi and Yuka Okkotsu. As the grandchildren of Yuta Okkotsu and Maki Zen’in, they have a special mission: to help an alien named Marulu Val Vol Yelvori, who goes by Maru, and determine if he and his people, the Simurians, can live peacefully with humans.
Since its release in 2025, Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo has received high praise from both critics and fans, becoming a significant success with its three published volumes. An anime adaptation is planned, and while a release date hasn’t been announced yet, work on the next part is already underway.
