With one of HBO’s top comedies ending soon, many agree it’s actually improving with each episode. It’s funny that the world of show business itself is often the source of the funniest stories. While not always successful – Judd Apatow’s 2022 movie, The Bubble, is a good example of a satire that didn’t quite land – poking fun at Hollywood can be a winning formula.
Shows that playfully mock the TV and movie industry can be surprisingly good, as seen in critically acclaimed series like Netflix’s BoJack Horseman and the recent Apple TV+ hit The Studio. These satirical shows range from lighthearted and affectionate takes on the industry to surprisingly sharp critiques of Hollywood’s inner workings – all while keeping audiences entertained.
HBO’s acclaimed series Hacks offers a sharp and witty look at the entertainment industry. The show centers on the unexpected bond between Deborah Vance, a seasoned comedian played by Jean Smart, and her younger writing partner, Ava, portrayed by Hannah Einbinder. When the series begins, Deborah is facing declining popularity, and Ava needs a career boost after a poorly received joke on Twitter leads to public backlash. This unlikely pairing forms the heart of the show.
HBO’s Hacks Is Getting Even Better In Season 5
It wasn’t the most promising start to what could have been a successful and heartfelt connection between these two generations of comedians. But the show, Hacks, consistently surprises its audience, as demonstrated by the unexpected conclusion of its fourth season. Similar to a more critical and insightful version of Entourage, Hacks fearlessly satirizes the Hollywood scene, while always remaining focused on the complex and surprisingly tender relationship between its two main characters.
With shows like Succession and The White Lotus making us surprisingly care about flawed characters, it’s not surprising that the main characters in Hacks are often selfish, untrustworthy, and difficult. What is surprising, though, is how much we still like them – and the show’s fifth season is cleverly exploring that with some unexpected twists.
Hacks Is Already One Of The Best Sitcoms Of The 2020s
Season 5 of Hacks offers plenty of reasons to genuinely cheer for Deborah, from a quick romance with a musician who’s also a fan, to landing a big show at Madison Square Garden. Like her granddaughter Ava, Deborah is far from perfect, but the show’s surprising decision to give her life a positive turn is a heartwarming development in the series’ final season.
As a huge fan of television, I already knew Hacks was destined to be remembered as one of the greats – a truly top-tier sitcom of its time. So, honestly, I wouldn’t have been surprised if the final season had gone really dark, fully exposing the flaws and worst sides of both Ava and Deborah. It felt like the show had earned the right to take some risks, even if that meant a less-than-happy ending.
It’s genuinely heartwarming to see Deborah thriving both at work and in her personal life as the show comes to an end. In the often-cynical world of comedy, a genuinely happy outcome can be a refreshing surprise, and that’s exactly what Hacks delivers. This proves that even in its final season, the HBO sitcom still knows how to keep viewers guessing and remains powerfully engaging.
