The upcoming release of the Prime Video series Spider-Noir is a big event for both DC and Marvel Comics. Nicolas Cage is achieving something unique in the world of superheroes: he’s making his first live-action appearance as Ben Reilly’s Spider-Man Noir when the series begins streaming on MGM+ on May 25.
Two days after its initial release, the series comes to Prime Video, presenting a Spider-Man story inspired by classic film noir. The series features a clone of Peter Parker—originally intended to battle Spider-Man—who unexpectedly becomes his partner in fighting crime.
Outside of being Spider-Man, he works as a detective, much like the classic characters Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe from old movies. The animated series, Spider-Noir, is filmed in black and white to capture the style of those films, but a color version will also be available.
But the show isn’t just the first time Spider-Man Noir has appeared in live-action. It’s actually a historic moment because Nicolas Cage is now the first actor to play two of the most iconic comic book superheroes – Superman (from the 2023 film The Flash) and now Spider-Man Noir – in live-action movies and TV shows.
Spider-Noir Features Nicolas Cage’s Live-Action Debut As Spider-Man
While Nicolas Cage previously voiced a version of Spider-Man in the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, this new TV show marks his first time playing the superhero in live-action. This suggests Marvel plans to regularly include the noir version of Spider-Man in future Peter Parker stories.
Next year, Nicolas Cage will return to voice Spider-Man Noir in the upcoming animated film Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. This version of Spider-Man – a tough, world-weary detective haunted by his past – reflects a current trend in how comic book characters are portrayed on screen, often with darker and more complex personalities.
This TV show seems like Sony Pictures and Amazon MGM’s answer to the recent wave of dark, gritty superhero stories, such as The Penguin miniseries, the movie The Batman, and the Joker films. It’s part of a larger trend, including shows like Spider-Noir, that reflects the mood of our current times.
Audiences are growing tired of typical superhero stories with simple plots and flashy costumes. They now crave more realistic and flawed characters – antiheroes who grapple with the complexities of the real world. This is why Nicolas Cage would be a surprisingly good choice to play both Spider-Man and Superman.
Cage Is Making History For Both Spider-Man And Superman
Nicolas Cage’s brief appearance as Superman in The Flash might have surprised viewers, but it was a role he almost played decades ago. He was originally cast to star as Clark Kent in a Superman movie planned in the late 1990s by director Tim Burton, though that film was ultimately never made.
Having already voiced Spider-Man Noir, he was the natural fit to play this new live-action version of Peter Parker. This brings together two of the biggest heroes from DC and Marvel – Spider-Man, Batman, and Superman – in a unique way. It’s the first time an actor known for playing one of these iconic characters is now portraying another.
Can you believe it’s been almost 50 years since we first saw a live-action Spider-Man? I remember watching Nicholas Hammond swing into action back in 1977 – that TV movie was basically the first episode of The Amazing Spider-Man series. And since then, so many different actors have taken on the roles of Spidey, Superman, and Batman – it’s amazing to see how these characters have been reimagined over the years!
| Superhero | Year Of Live-Action Debut | Number Of Actors |
|---|---|---|
| Batman | 1943 | 13 |
| Superman | 1948 | 11 |
| Spider-Man | 1977 | 6 |
Until now, no actor had ever portrayed two of these famous superheroes in live-action films. Before Nicolas Cage, the closest anyone got was Ben Affleck, who first played the actor who portrayed Superman – George Reeves in the 2006 film Hollywoodland – and later went on to become Batman himself.
However, Spider-Noir is truly groundbreaking because Nicolas Cage is the first actor to officially play two different superheroes in live-action movies. Remarkably, he achieved this at age 62, after already taking on the role of Superman in his late fifties. It seems age doesn’t matter when it comes to playing both Ben Reilly and Clark Kent!
