Luigi’s Mansion Is the Ideal Super Mario Galaxy Follow-Up

With the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, a whole world of Mario-themed films is now possible. Considering the many Mario games and spin-offs created over the years, there’s plenty of material to build an entire cinematic universe around the beloved character.

Nintendo would be smart to build on the success of the Mario movies by creating films based on other characters and stories within the Mario world – essentially launching a new movie universe that could compete with franchises like Marvel. Mario has an edge, though. Because of the many different types of Mario games – from racing to sports to puzzles – they can make movies in various genres, appealing to a wider range of viewers.

Honestly, if Nintendo ever made a movie based on one of their spin-offs, I think Luigi’s Mansion would be perfect! Luigi is such a great character, but he always seems to live in Mario’s shadow. And Charlie Day is amazing as Luigi in the Super Mario Bros. Movie – he totally deserves a chance to lead his own film and really shine!

Luigi’s Mansion Is Perfect for a Horror Movie

Unlike most Mario games, Luigi’s Mansion stars Luigi, who is famously more timid than his brother. This actually works perfectly for the game, as he’s trapped in a haunted house and relies on a professor and a special vacuum cleaner to protect him from ghosts. Because Luigi is so easily frightened, the game cleverly makes you feel scared too – his jumpiness and overreactions create a sense of tension, making you anticipate danger around every corner.

The atmosphere and tone of the Luigi’s Mansion games would be ideal for a movie adaptation. It could appeal to fans of horror and mystery, offering something different from the usual Mario films, while still being appropriate for children – as long as they’re old enough and can handle slightly spooky content. It wouldn’t be too scary to prevent families from enjoying it together.

The existing Luigi’s Mansion games offer a great foundation for a movie series. The idea of exploring different haunted locations is ideal, and Luigi could become known as a reluctant ghost-hunting expert. He consistently rises to the occasion and bravely faces challenges, particularly when loved ones are in danger.

The Mario Franchise Is Perfect for a Cinematic Universe

The success of Luigi’s Mansion shows how much potential there is for Mario movies, and they don’t even need to be part of one big story—they can exist separately within the Mario universe. Because the franchise is generally fun and a little silly, it wouldn’t be surprising to see movies based on spin-offs like Mario Kart or Mario Tennis, which could also attract fans of sports games.

Honestly, a Luigi’s Mansion movie seems way more doable than trying to adapt a sports game. The cool thing is, the games already have a story! Unlike something like Mario Party where you’d have to build everything from scratch, Luigi’s Mansion gives you a solid plot to work with. Plus, everyone knows and (hopefully!) likes Luigi, and seeing him overcome his fears would be awesome. If they followed the first game, with him searching for Mario in that haunted house, I think a lot of fans would be really into it.

Following the success of the Luigi’s Mansion movie, Princess Peach: Showtime! would be a great choice for the next spin-off adaptation. It features a popular character and already has a built-in storyline. Looking at all the Mario games released, it’s clear the franchise offers a wealth of material for potential films.

It’s too early to know what Nintendo plans to do with future Mario movies, especially with the upcoming Zelda film as their current focus. However, adapting video games into movies can be very profitable, and Luigi’s Mansion seems like a great option to expand the Mario world onto the big screen and potentially launch a whole cinematic universe.
