The Prettiest Girl in America Won Late Night This Week

Seth Meyers’ impression of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is really hitting its stride! He’s been doing it in his monologues and “A Closer Look” segments all week, and it’s improving with each performance. While his voice naturally has a similar resonance to Kennedy’s, the truly brilliant part is how Meyers captures Kennedy’s unwavering conviction – that absolute, almost unhinged certainty. Many attempts at this impression focus solely on mimicking the voice, but Meyers nails the feeling that this is someone completely detached from reality – someone who, famously, has collected bat droppings.

The social media team at The Late Show deserves another shout-out for their clever use of sounds on TikTok. I’ve been meaning to mention this for a while, ever since they had Senator Elizabeth Warren lip-sync to a classic scene from Lizzie McGuire. Their choice of sounds is brilliant – like using a clip of Sally Field kissing Stephen Colbert for a bit about being a ‘Role Model’! And their use of the “We are such a delight” sound, previously used by Apple Martin, for a Colbert/Stewart lip-sync was perfect. Here’s a look at other highlights from late night this week.

Nicole Byer Recherche du Temps Perdu

This clip starts with Nicole Byer playfully referring to herself as “fat” and acknowledging someone else in the audience who shares that identity – she recognized them by their reaction to her story about being denied a spicy chicken sandwich. It was a perfect example of body positivity. Byer shared several funny stories, including returning to her high school for the sandwich and a trip to a New Jersey sex hotel with her friend Sasheer Zamata. What really made her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! special was the comfortable and natural energy she brought to the show. She clearly felt at home.

Colbert and Krasinski Get Their Wrassle On

With only a few weeks left, The Late Show is ending with a bang. Guests have been sharing poems, giving artwork, and playfully challenging Stephen Colbert. John Krasinski jokingly attempted a physical challenge, which Colbert turned into a somewhat suggestive test of strength. The interview ended with a leg wrestling match, where Colbert, one of eleven children, had to teach Krasinski, who is the youngest of three, the ropes. Hopefully, the show stays this energetic until the very end!

The Rocky Horror Show Freaks the Squares

Late-night talk shows have a wonderful way of keeping Broadway alive, and The Tonight Show has been particularly good at showcasing musicals since The Rosie O’Donnell Show ended. This week, they featured a performance from the Tony-nominated The Rocky Horror Show. Luke Evans sang “Sweet Transvestite” and then quickly headed to the Met Gala dressed in a Tom of Finland-inspired outfit – a true Broadway performer! Thankfully, the performance included both Rachel Dratch as the Criminologist and a chance for the audience to get involved.

Prayers Up for Evie McGee Colbert

Evie McGee Colbert looked fantastic on the latest “First Drafts” segment of The Late Show. Her dress was stunning, and Stephen Colbert playfully reacted with mock despair when his wife jokingly walked out. While assisting Colbert like Vanna White, Evie also teased him about how awkward it might be for him to suddenly start reciting poetry to strangers after leaving the show. She pointed out that not everyone appreciates unsolicited poetry. Essentially, she was playfully suggesting that sometimes, things are better left unsaid.

Meg Stalter’s Pop-Diva Debut on Late Night

Everyone’s wondering if Meg Stalter copied Madonna’s Coachella outfit, but who can say for sure? Certainly not Seth Meyers, who seemed very impressed with her look! Stalter performed a hilarious bit playing a pop star with a huge team and even a contest for look-alikes (including for dogs!). Meyers happily let her do her thing, and her costume and makeup really enhanced the comedy. It just goes to show how important good makeup – especially liquid highlighter – can be when a performer is at their best.
