Sony lost $765 million on its investment in Bungie, the company behind games like Destiny 2 and Marathon, as Bungie’s value has significantly decreased over the past year.
The company reported its financial results for the year 2025. Overall, profits were good, but they recorded a loss of 120.1 billion yen (about $765 million) related to their investment in Bungie.
Sony previously reduced the estimated value of a well-known game developer by $204.2 million (31.5 billion yen) during the second quarter of the fiscal year, coinciding with a decline in players for Destiny 2. However, the biggest loss – $565 million – occurred in the final quarter, which included the release of the Marathon game.
Over the past year, Bungie’s estimated value has decreased by approximately 20%, falling from the $3.6 billion it was acquired for in 2022.
Marathon sales cause Bungie’s value to plummet
While several things probably led to this loss, it’s clear that the performance of Marathon – Bungie’s only significant new release during this period – deserves a lot of attention.
The game was well-received by critics and initially attracted over 88,000 players on Steam. Despite this strong start, sales haven’t been great, and the number of players has gradually decreased since its launch.

While official sales numbers aren’t available yet, experts estimate the game sold between 1.2 and 2 million copies by the end of March. This is believed to be significantly less than Sony expected, especially considering the game cost roughly $250 million to make.
There isn’t one clear reason why Marathon didn’t become as popular as Sony and Bungie expected. While games like Arc Raiders have shown some success, extraction shooters generally appeal to a smaller audience. Plus, many players have found Marathon to be quite difficult.
Despite the challenges, the game has built a loyal player base who enjoy its most difficult content, such as the Cryo Archive, and Bungie plans to continue adding new content for many years to come.
