Star Fox is a well-known Nintendo character, having appeared in many games and even making a cameo in the recent Mario movie. Now, a new Star Fox game has been announced, but fans are expressing their disappointment with it.
I first got into Star Fox way back in ’93, and it’s been a favorite ever since. It’s one of those games that just stuck with me – really challenging ship battles, a great story, and characters you can’t help but love. Slippy Toad is a classic, Falco Lombardi has an awesome name, and of course, you’ve got the leader, Star Fox himself!
Over the years, there have been nine different Star Fox games, including new installments, side stories, and even a remake of the beloved Star Fox 64. A tenth game was recently announced during a Nintendo Direct presentation, but fans have expressed disappointment with what they’ve seen so far.
Star Fox has fans calling it “Nintendo’s Skyrim”
Nintendo surprised fans with a Star Fox Direct announcement, revealing a new Star Fox game is coming to the Switch 2 on June 25, 2026.
It turned out this supposed ‘new’ game was actually a remake of Star Fox 64 – the second time that game has been remade since its original release in 1997.
The latest Star Fox game builds upon everything fans loved about the original – the story, gameplay, battles, characters, levels, and multiplayer – offering a lot of fresh content. Plus, it features significantly improved graphics compared to the 1997 version.
Fans reacted negatively to the game, with many playfully comparing it to “Nintendo’s Skyrim.” Most agreed that it felt like a rehash of older titles, and they had hoped for a completely new Star Fox adventure.
Fans were excited to see Star Fox 64 making a comeback, with one playfully suggesting they were ready for ‘Star Fox 65’. Many joked that the series felt like Nintendo’s version of Skyrim, constantly being re-released, and one commenter pointed out that the franchise largely revolves around a single, beloved game.
One fan jokingly said the ’64’ in the game Star Fox 64 refers to how many times it’s been remade, which many others agreed with.
Look, they’re adding stuff and tweaking the game, which is cool, but honestly, most of us were hoping for a totally new Star Fox game, not just another update to the original Star Fox 64. It feels like the third version of the same thing, and we were really craving something fresh.
