Randy Pitchford, the CEO of Gearbox Software, faced backlash after sharing an image created by artificial intelligence on May 3rd. This led fans to question how the company is utilizing AI.
Pitchford posted a picture on X (formerly Twitter) created by an AI. He’d asked the AI to imagine what he looks like based on their conversations.
Pitchford responds to criticism over AI use
I asked my AI to create a self-portrait showing how it ‘feels’ based on our conversations, and this was the result. The words in the background were added by the AI and don’t relate to anything specific.
Pitchford said the image was purely intended to be a “dumb, silly thing.”The post received criticism, as people wondered why the image was created and expressed concerns about the increasing use of AI-generated content in gaming.
A user commented that relying too much on generative AI can be detrimental to businesses. While it might seem harmless, constantly providing data to these systems isn’t the right approach.
Okay, so I saw some people criticizing a tweet from Pitchford, saying it made generative AI seem okay, and honestly, his response was pretty blunt! He basically said if you think that, you’re way off base. It was a strong reaction, but he clearly doesn’t appreciate that interpretation.
He brushed off the worries of others, saying it was simply a trivial matter and shouldn’t be blown out of proportion.
Several responses expressed worry that Gearbox Software might be using AI in its game development, especially after players criticized the latest patch notes.
Pitchford explained that their company has a strict rule: they don’t use artificial intelligence in any way that would be visible to customers.
He repeated his stance in subsequent responses, explaining that mistakes in the patch notes were simply due to human error.
In a follow-up post on May 4, Pitchford said he used ChatGPT as a “search engine” and that the original AI image had been created with the prompt, “Make a picture of yourself as if you worked at my company, Gearbox Software.”

In 2025, after receiving criticism about performance problems with Borderlands 4, outspoken Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford famously told dissatisfied players to “code your own engine” – essentially challenging them to build the game themselves.
