At the opening night of the TCM Classic Film Festival, Jane Fonda honored her frequent co-star, the late Robert Redford, during a screening of Barefoot in the Park. Fonda fondly recalled Redford’s kindness and dedication to meaningful films, but also playfully admitted to being struck by his good looks. She shared a story from their first meeting on the 1966 film The Chase, recalling asking him if he ever had affairs. His response, she said, was surprisingly strange: he claimed he’d only be interested in someone ‘like a hooker.’ Despite her role as a sex worker in Klute, Fonda joked that she apparently didn’t quite fit that description in Redford’s eyes.
Jane Fonda shared that she and Robert Redford initially connected over a surprisingly down-to-earth topic: building with stone. Both were in the process of constructing houses with stone walls at the time. Redford was in Hollywood working on a film with Fonda, but he was eager to return to Utah and continue building. Fonda, married to a Frenchman, had recently built a country house and was also focused on stonework. They spent a lot of time happily discussing the details of stacking stones, even talking about using moss for insulation. Fonda also recalled that Redford was an avid climber, once scaling the large spire of the Fox Theater in Westwood and even breaking his arm while climbing his chimney one Christmas.
Jane Fonda also highlighted Robert Redford’s dedication to independent film through the Sundance Institute and Festival. She then strongly criticized Skydance’s purchase of Paramount and Warner Bros., a bold statement considering Paramount’s film Barefoot in the Park was being shown at the festival thanks to a loan from Ellison & Co.
For Fonda, Robert Redford’s appeal was undeniable. Host Ben Mankiewicz pointed out that Fonda rarely stayed to watch films after they finished, but she did this time. She playfully admitted she wanted to keep watching Redford. And she certainly did – during the first of many kissing scenes, she audibly expressed her enthusiastic approval! It’s the kind of passionate engagement we should all strive for in our own lives, right?
