Invincible VS review: A bloody good fighting game packed with personality

Invincible VS is a challenging but fair fighting game. It might take some getting used to for newcomers, but experienced players will love the variety of attacks and defenses. The game offers enough complexity to be truly competitive, especially when facing skilled opponents online.

Invincible VS is sure to attract a lot of new players, especially fans of the popular Amazon Prime series (currently on its fourth season) and the original comics. They’ll be excited to play team-based battles with a roster of 18 characters from the show. While superhero fighting games aren’t a new concept, Invincible VS has big shoes to fill, following successful titles like Marvel Vs Capcom and the DC Injustice series. Thankfully, it delivers a satisfying experience.

Invincible VS is a visually impressive game that perfectly captures the look and feel of the original comic and animated series. Quarter Up has done a fantastic job bringing the Invincible universe to life in 3D. The animations are dynamic and realistic, and special ‘impact frames’ during super-powered moves really emphasize successful attacks.

I like the way you move

The game makes it simple to follow the action, clearly showing each hit, throw, block, and special move with bright, noticeable effects that don’t get in the way. The stop-motion animation is delightful and successfully brings the look and feel of the original show into a 3D world.

The fighters in Invincible VS have just as much attitude as they do in the animated series. Each character has their own unique pre-fight banter, taunts, and victory lines, filled with funny insults that fans will enjoy. While games like Mortal Kombat and Injustice are known for this, Invincible VS delivers clever dialogue that makes every battle feel fresh and special.

The voice acting is generally excellent, although it’s disappointing that not all of the original cast returned. JK Simmons delivers a fantastic performance as Omni-Man, and while Steven Yeun isn’t involved, Aleks Le truly shines as Invincible, nailing the character’s voice. Unfortunately, the actor chosen to imitate Allen the Alien isn’t very good, making the character difficult to watch.

The Glitch Mob delivered an amazing soundtrack packed with energetic breakbeats and drum ‘n bass, comparable to the music in Tekken 8. It seamlessly fits the show’s overall style while still feeling unique, and it’s full of high-energy tracks perfect for powering through intense action.

Invincible VS’s superb story mode leaves us wanting more

The story mode for Invincible VS was a collaborative effort by Helen Leigh, a writer and producer for the animated show, Mike Rogers (narrative director at Quarter Up), and Robert Kirkman, the co-creator of Invincible. It feels like an extra episode of the series, expanding on the stories of characters we haven’t seen much of yet and introducing new characters with mysteries of their own.

The story is really captivating, and it’s interesting to watch characters who normally dislike each other team up to fight a shared threat. The ending leaves you wanting more, with a lot of unanswered questions that we can hopefully expect to be resolved in future downloadable content.

Besides the Story mode, Arcade mode is a typical fighting game experience. Players complete a series of fights and are then rewarded with a brief comment from their chosen character, but there isn’t much more to it than that.

A fighting game for everyone

Players have a choice of two ways to control the game: a Standard mode with easier special move inputs and a separate dash button, or a Motion mode that uses traditional directional and button combinations (like a quarter-circle forward plus a light punch). This type of option isn’t new – Street Fighter 6 also offered ‘Modern’ and ‘Classic’ controls, and both were popular with players.

The game’s Standard control scheme is easy to pick up, teaching players how to combine attacks in a similar way to the fighting game DNF Duel. A tutorial specifically designed for this control style helps newcomers learn the fundamentals of tag fighting, and provides a good starting point for those who might want to try the more complex motion controls later on. Choosing between Motion and Standard controls doesn’t affect the game’s difficulty or gameplay significantly – it just makes the game more approachable for players unfamiliar with traditional fighting game controls.

Invincible VS features a lot of gameplay options for defeating opponents. Players can use defensive moves like Pushblocking and Heroic Strikes to avoid damage, while offensive techniques like Snapbacks and Active Tags create opportunities for powerful attacks. Although there are many mechanics to learn, they become second nature quickly. Mastering these tools and chaining combos with tags can be challenging, but it’s not as complex as Dragon Ball FighterZ. The game gets incredibly fast-paced and unpredictable when players are low on health and time runs out, triggering a ‘Sudden Death’ mode that forces aggressive play to prevent health from depleting.

Every character has their own special moves and strengths, making each fight a fun learning experience. Some characters, like Allen the Alien, excel at grappling, while Robot and Cecil prefer to keep opponents at a distance. DupliKate, Bulletproof, and Battle Beast are best in close combat, but characters like Rex Splode and Atom Eve are well-rounded. Players can build a balanced team, or focus on speedy fighters or tough, defensive units – either way, it’s guaranteed to be a blast!

Invincible VS offers a great balance of depth and accessibility in its fighting system. It’s complex enough to satisfy experienced players, but easy to pick up for newcomers. The game is a blast to play and perfectly captures the spirit of the Invincible comics and show. It’s a fantastic tag fighter for both beginners and long-time fans.
