The initial trailer for the new Resident Evil movie finally shows fans what director Zach Cregger has planned for the film based on the popular video game.
The Resident Evil franchise has appeared on the big screen before, most notably through Paul W.S. Anderson’s films starring Milla Jovovich. While those six movies included some characters from the games, they largely told a separate story focused on Jovovich’s character, Alice.
The series is returning to its scary origins, and Zach Cregger, who directed Barbarian and Weapons, is now in charge.
He’s mentioned before how important it was to stay faithful to the source material, aware that fans would be very critical if the movie didn’t align with the established story. Luckily, the first trailer for the new Resident Evil film suggests a brutal and exciting new take on the series.
Austin Abrams faces zombies and creepy monsters in the first Resident Evil trailer
The initial trailer for the new Resident Evil shows Austin Abrams, playing a delivery driver named Bryan, stumbling upon a remote house. He then calls his girlfriend, first apologizing for a dropped call, and then unsettlingly suggests they might not be able to talk again.
He soon finds gruesome bodies that begin to pursue him, forcing him to grab a rifle and flee through the empty streets of a city. A particularly terrifying scene shows him hiding in a sewer, where he encounters a massive, pale, and swollen figure – obviously someone transformed by the T-Virus.
The film then cuts to scenes of the man covered in blood, desperately running from a wave of zombies. These zombies fall from buildings in violent, bloody bursts. It’s clear the director wasn’t shy with the gore, walking a tightrope between frightening moments and over-the-top violence.
This new movie will be much more focused on creating genuine scares and suspense, unlike the action-packed style of the previous films. The story follows Bryan as he struggles to survive a terrifying and chaotic night. Luckily, audiences won’t have to wait long to see it – it hits theaters on September 18th.
