Invincible VS Review: A Brilliant and Bloody Fighting Game

It’s a fantastic time to be a superhero or comic book fan! More stories than ever are being made into movies, TV shows, and other media, so there’s something for everyone, no matter your taste.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe and James Gunn’s DC Universe both showcase classic hero stories, but some of the most interesting superhero content is now coming from independent comics. One great example is ‘Invincible’.

Robert Kirkman, the creator of The Walking Dead, brought his incredibly popular and action-packed indie superhero comic, Invincible, to life with a fantastic animated series on Amazon Prime. Now, fans can experience the same intense world in a new fighting game called Invincible VS.

Invincible VS, first revealed at the Xbox Summer Showcase in June 2025, promises to deliver the same intense action and graphic violence fans expect from the comic and animated series. The game will feature a complete story mode with voice acting and animation, and is also designed for competitive play in fighting game tournaments.

This project is made with a lot of energy and determination, and you can really see that in how well it’s done and how exciting it is. Like the characters in Invincible, it doesn’t hold back.

That’s the Neat Part

Fans will appreciate all the little details and quirks taken directly from the Amazon Prime series.

Beyond the exciting battles, the story mode truly shines thanks to its incredible animation and voice acting in the cutscenes. The animation is stunning, featuring well-designed characters and truly impressive fight sequences. It’s easily one of the best single-player experiences I’ve had in a fighting game. The way the game flows between fights and cutscenes is seamless, and each element enhances the other.

Including the TV show’s cast adds a genuine and realistic feel, making it feel almost like a continuation of the series.

It’s a little disappointing that not all of the original voice actors returned, though the rest of the cast does a great job. The voice direction is still very good overall, and I quickly got used to the changes. However, longtime fans might notice the missing voices at first.

Tag Team Champs

Invincible VS is a team-based fighting game where you battle with three characters at a time. It plays similarly to games like Marvel vs Capcom or Tekken Tag Tournament, where switching between fighters feels like adding an extra layer of defense. The game boasts a fantastic roster of characters from the Invincible universe, including both beloved heroes and villains, and even introduces a brand-new fighter created by the series’ author, Robert Kirkman, named Ella Mental.

One of the best things about Invincible VS is the diverse range of characters. The game has a large roster, offering a great mix of powerful, fast, and varied fighters. A big part of enjoying fighting games is finding a character that matches how you like to play, and I quickly found several characters in this game that I really connected with.

Once your team is set, the exciting part starts! Invincible focuses on making combat faster and more dynamic, and it achieves this in several ways. One key element is the smart AI, which adapts to your actions and tries to keep up with – or even surpass – your speed.

Honestly, fighting in Invincible VS felt super dynamic. It wasn’t just me attacking and the AI just reacting – it felt like we were both reading each other. If I got aggressive, the AI would step up its game, pushing me to keep up the pace. It made every fight feel fresh and natural because no two encounters were ever quite the same. It really felt like a back-and-forth!

Invincible VS is visually striking and keeps viewers engaged. The show is famous for its intense violence and graphic imagery, and this installment delivers on that promise. As fights progress, characters become increasingly bloodied and battered, realistically portraying the toll of combat.

The game shows you how healthy your character is, so you can quickly adjust your tactics based on their condition. It makes for a really engaging and dynamic experience.

Besides the main story mode, Invincible VS has a few cool extras. If I just want to jump in and beat up some opponents, the arcade mode is perfect, and I can even choose how many rounds I want to play depending on the version I pick.

The online experience is typical for the genre, with both casual and ranked matches. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it provides the expected online options. You can customize your character with different loadouts and costumes, adding variety to online matches. Plus, the game supports arcade sticks for a more classic feel.

Let me tell you, Invincible VS runs smoothly. I was consistently hitting 60 frames per second, and honestly, I didn’t see a single dropped frame the entire time. It just felt perfect, which is huge for a fighting game – and Invincible VS absolutely delivers on that. It was a really flawless experience.

2026 looks like a fantastic year for fighting game fans, with major updates planned for popular titles and several new games on the horizon. While it’s unclear if the new game, Invincible VS, will become a long-term competitor, it’s definitely one to keep an eye on, particularly with the EVO tournament happening just a few months later.
