’s run on the original Switch was truly legendary, but it wasn’t without its disappointments.
The Nintendo Switch 2 can now play games like Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, which were never playable on the original Switch – despite many reports suggesting they might be. The same technology that powered Breath of the Wild is now allowing players to experience these older titles.
Both Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are now available on Nintendo’s newest consoles, though not in the way fans were hoping. While they’ve been updated for the latest hardware, these aren’t the remakes or versions many Zelda enthusiasts wanted.
The Rumored Twilight Princess and Wind Waker HD Bundle Now Looks Like It’s Not Happening
For a long time, fans of the Zelda series talked about a possible collection of older games coming to the Nintendo Switch. However, it never materialized. When the Switch 2 was released, Nintendo hadn’t even updated Wind Waker HD or Twilight Princess HD for its new system, and a combined package of those games wasn’t available either.
It felt promising when Wind Waker became available on Nintendo Switch Online thanks to the Switch 2’s GameCube emulator, but it turned out to be the original game, not the much-improved HD version.
A new unofficial method for playing Twilight Princess HD and Wind Waker HD on the Switch has surfaced, but it’s not the official release fans have been hoping for. With more unconfirmed information about future Zelda games appearing online, it seems the rumored Twilight Princess and Wind Waker HD bundle is likely no longer being considered.
There’s been recent talk that the next major Zelda game, expected next year, might actually be a remake of one of the older, 2D Zelda titles.
If the rumors are correct and Ocarina of Time is indeed releasing later this year, Nintendo would have its Zelda release schedule planned out for the next two years. That makes it difficult to see where the previously discussed HD bundle of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess would fit in.
The Zelda Movie Is Setting Up a Golden Opportunity For Nintendo to Officially Bring Twilight Princess to Switch 2
Zelda fans are understandably disappointed that Nintendo hasn’t released Twilight Princess yet. Since Wind Waker is already available on Nintendo Switch Online, there’s little reason why Twilight Princess shouldn’t be too, at the very least.
Things might be changing soon. Recent conversations about the 2027 film have focused on a photo of a clapperboard used during filming. The image shows that the movie’s version of Link appears to be designed with a look similar to the one from Twilight Princess.
If that’s really what Link will look like in the movie, it’s surprising Nintendo isn’t doing more to get fans excited about Twilight Princess before it comes out.
It’s understandable why Nintendo chooses to concentrate on new games instead of simply re-releasing older titles like Twilight Princess HD and Wind Waker HD, and there’s even a certain respect to be had for that decision. However, the fact that so many Zelda fans are using emulators to play these games demonstrates a strong desire to experience them on the Switch and future Switch consoles.
