Taylor Sheridan’s latest series, Dutton Ranch, is proving more successful than Luke Grimes’ previous spinoff, Marshals. Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser reprise their roles as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler in Dutton Ranch, which premieres on Paramount+ on May 15th. Marshals, however, has successfully expanded the Yellowstone universe to mainstream network television.
The final episode of Yellowstone ended with Kayce Dutton selling the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch to the Broken Rock Reservation, leading to a split between the last two Dutton siblings. With Thomas Rainwater and the Broken Rock people now in control of the land, they began removing all traces of the Yellowstone and the Dutton family, notably dismantling the famous ‘Y’ brand.
So, after everything that went down, Kayce decided to stay in Montana and become a US Marshal. Meanwhile, the show is going to follow Beth and Rip as they start their new life down in South Texas on their own ranch. Honestly, it’s a pretty unexpected turn of events, especially considering what Kayce hinted at in the Yellowstone finale – I definitely didn’t see this coming!
Kayce Didn’t Make His Own Brand Like He Said In Yellowstone‘s Finale
In the final moments of Yellowstone‘s series finale, “Life is a Promise,” Kayce Dutton leaves the Dutton Ranch behind for good. As he drives away, Rip and Lloyd take down the ranch’s sign. Rip offers the sign to Kayce as a keepsake, but Kayce declines, indicating he doesn’t want a reminder of his past.
“I think I’ll make my own brand.”
Kayce consistently avoids building a reputation separate from his family. In Marshals, he actively rejects anything that reminds people of the Duttons. While the Dutton name carries a certain weight, it also creates problems for Kayce, as Deputy U.S. Marshal Harry Gifford (Brett Cullen) constantly reminds him of his family’s past mistakes and holds him accountable for them.
The show Marshals was initially going to be called Y: Marshals, but the “Y” was removed to give the series its own distinct identity. Despite this, many viewers are drawn to Marshals because they’re fans of Kayce and the original Yellowstone. Interestingly, the Yellowstone brand is still visible in the Marshals logo.
Although Kayce mentioned wanting to create his own ranching identity in Yellowstone, it’s more likely he won’t. Throughout his life, Kayce has resisted being tied to the Dutton family and their history, but keeps finding himself drawn back in. He particularly despises the ‘Y’ brand, especially because his father, John Dutton III (Kevin Costner), had it forcefully burned onto his skin.
Beth & Rip Made A New Brand In Dutton Ranch
To build excitement for its May 15th launch on Paramount+, Dutton Ranch revealed a new logo, which was also displayed by drones at the Stagecoach Festival. The “DR” brand of Dutton Ranch is a deliberate nod to the famous “Y” from Yellowstone, positioning the new series as a direct continuation – effectively season six – of the original show.
Considering Beth Dutton’s strong feelings about the Yellowstone Ranch, it’s unexpected that she’d want to brand her new ranch. She often expressed a desire to sell the Yellowstone and distance herself from it, only staying because of her father. After leaving the Yellowstone, most people would assume she wouldn’t try to recreate something similar.
The “DR” brand might be the idea of Beth’s husband, Rip, and a way for him to leave his mark on the Yellowstone Ranch. Rip was incredibly loyal to John Dutton and dedicated his life to protecting the ranch and the Dutton family. Beth loves Rip, and creating the brand could be her way of ensuring he has a lasting legacy of his own.
Even if Beth and Rip had taken over a ranch, it would have been the Wheeler Ranch. Rip always wished John Dutton would see him as a son, but that never happened. Interestingly, when Rip had the opportunity to name his own ranch, he chose “Dutton Ranch.” Throughout the series, Rip consistently seemed more proud to be considered part of the Dutton family than Kayce, despite being a Dutton by birth.
