Lost Star Is Still Upset About Brutal Plot Twist 20 Years Later

20 years later, one Lost star is still upset about a brutal plot twist in season 2.

A major turning point in the TV show Lost happens in season 2, episode 20, “Two for the Road.” In this episode, Michael Dawson kills both Ana Lucia Cortez and Libby Smith. Although these characters make brief appearances later on, their deaths meant they were no longer main characters in the series.

In an interview with The Independent, Harold Perrineau shared that one of the two actors affected by a major plot twist remains angry enough to not speak to him, even after 20 years. He didn’t say whether it was Ricki Lake (Rodriguez) or Rachel True (Watros). Perrineau chuckled, explaining that he only played his role as written and wasn’t responsible for their characters being removed from the show. You can read his full comments below.

It’s strange, but even now, one of the actresses I worked with won’t speak to me. I always tell her, ‘I didn’t create the material – I’m just doing my job, just like you are!’

Perrineau discussed finding out about Michael’s actions – killing two other survivors from their flight – after Michael had been off-screen for a while. He said the producers called him and explained the storyline, but insisted it remain a secret until filming. Perrineau felt ‘wildly betrayed’ by Michael’s character and still hasn’t spoken to the actor who played him.

Many fans thought Ana Lucia and Libby were killed off Lost because the actresses were arrested for driving under the influence. But show creators Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse told TV Guide back in 2006 that the characters’ deaths were planned well in advance, and the actresses’ legal issues didn’t factor into the decision. Thanks to Harold Perrineau, we now know that while Lindelof and Cuse were aware of the plan early on, Michelle Rodriguez and Cynthia Watros didn’t find out until the day the scene was filmed.

Driven by a desperate need to rescue his son, Walt, from the Others on the island, Michael tragically killed Ana Lucia. He and Walt were then able to escape, and neither appeared in season 3. However, Michael returned in season 4, deeply troubled by his actions and the damage they caused to his relationship with Walt.

In the season 4 finale, Michael tragically died attempting to save people on the Kahana freighter. While intended as a heroic and meaningful conclusion, actor Joe Perrineau now feels, after 18 years, that his character’s ending wasn’t fully developed. He believes the storyline had potential for something more compelling and that the conclusion felt somewhat anticlimactic, despite some strong scenes.

Despite the difficult circumstances surrounding Michael’s character, Perrineau emphasizes that it didn’t overshadow his overall experience on Lost. He believes the show was groundbreaking, pushing the boundaries of television with its innovative storytelling. Ultimately, he feels that Lost‘s impact on TV is far more significant than any single plot point, including Michael’s fate. He says the way things unfolded doesn’t diminish the show’s importance.

Regarding the controversial ending of Lost, actress Libby Perrineau shared that she understood the creators’ intentions. She believes the story’s impact comes from the overall experience, not necessarily a neatly tied-up conclusion, and feels similarly about From. She acknowledges viewers crave complete answers, but points out that providing them would mean the show couldn’t continue. While she concedes the ending could have been improved, she ultimately remembers the six seasons as a very enjoyable experience.

Harold Perrineau stars as Sheriff Boyd Stevens in From, a horror series on MGM+. He’s a local lawman trying to protect the people of a town trapped by terrifying creatures and dark forces, and hoping to find a way for everyone to escape. Perrineau is also an executive producer on the show, alongside Jeff Pinker and Jack Bender, who both previously worked on Lost. Currently in its fourth season, From has been renewed for a fifth and final season.
