As a huge fan of the Toy Story movies, I was excited to hear that Andrew Stanton, the director, is already brainstorming ideas for a possible fifth film! It’s not out yet, of course, but it’s great to know they’re thinking about continuing Woody and Buzz’s adventures.
I’m so excited for the new Toy Story movie! It’s been a while – seven years since the last one and sixteen since Toy Story 3, which honestly felt like a good ending at the time. But now, Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the whole gang are facing a new challenge: Bonnie has a tablet named Lilypad, and it’s changing everything for them. I can’t wait to see how they handle it!
According to a preview in Entertainment Weekly, director Andrew Stanton says just two months of thinking about what it’s like to be a toy – even the everyday parts – gave him enough ideas for two more Toy Story movies. The story could continue with Bonnie, or it could focus on a new character, which is why he believes the franchise has potential to continue for a while.
As a huge movie fan, what really struck me about Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4 is how they handled time. It’s rare to see a series acknowledge and even use the passage of time like that. Most stories feel stuck, but Toy Story seems to have broken that mold. It makes me think a Toy Story 6 isn’t out of the question, and that time could actually add to the story instead of being a problem.
While a fifth Toy Story movie is in the works, Andrew Stanton won’t be directing it, stating it will likely be his last directorial effort. However, as Pixar’s Vice President of Creative, and having directed films like A Bug’s Life, Finding Nemo, WALL-E, Finding Dory, and now Toy Story 5, he plans to remain involved with the studio. He anticipates continuing to offer advice on future projects, even “from a rocking chair,” and sees this as a way to share his expertise and leave a lasting impact on Pixar by mentoring others.
According to Stanton, Toy Story 5 won’t necessarily lead into another movie or end with a suspenseful cliffhanger. Like Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4, it seems the film will tell a complete story that could wrap up the series, but still allow for potential future installments if desired.
If Toy Story 5 is a financial success, earning over $1 billion globally like the last two films, it would greatly increase the chances of a Toy Story 6. Although Hoppers did well in theaters, Pixar’s recent original movies haven’t been as successful. Pixar continues to develop original ideas, like the film Gatto, but they are currently prioritizing sequels, including the planned Incredibles 3 and Coco 2.
As a huge fan of Toy Story, I’ve been thinking about where the series could go. Bonnie’s still pretty young, so I wouldn’t mind seeing her story continue, maybe with a time jump to when she’s older in Toy Story 6. It’s been 16 years since Andy passed his toys on to her at the end of Toy Story 3, and while she’s been great, I think it might be time to focus on a new kid and tell their story. It feels like a natural progression for the franchise.
The cast of Toy Story 5 includes returning favorites like Woody, Buzz, Jessie, Bo Peep, and Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head, alongside new and beloved characters such as Forky and Duke Caboom. John Ratzenberger reprises his role as Hamm, while Wallace Shawn voices Rex, and Blake Clark is back as Slinky Dog. Other familiar voices include Bonnie Hunt as Dolly, Kristen Schaal as Trixie, John Hopkins as Mr. Pricklepants, Ernie Hudson as Combat Carl, Conan O’Brien as Smarty Pants, Craig Robinson as Atlas, and Shelby Rabara as Snappy, along with Bonnie and Lilypad.
Toy Story 5 releases in theaters on June 19.
