The Real Reason Disney Scrapped Tangled Sequel Finally Revealed

Disney’s popular 2010 animated movie was a hit, and a sequel was originally planned for theaters with a large budget. However, the project was cancelled, and the reason for its cancellation has now been made public.

Nathan Greno, the director of Tangled, recently discussed a potential sequel while promoting his new Netflix animated movie, Swapped, which comes out on May 1st. He revealed that Disney did consider making Tangled 2, but ultimately decided against it. The main reason was a lack of a compelling story idea that could successfully continue Rapunzel and Flynn’s adventures in a new film.

A Sequel Idea Could Not Be Figured Out

Greno clarified that he doesn’t object to sequels in general. After finishing Tangled, however, they faced a challenge. He explained it’s difficult to continue a story once the main character has already achieved their ultimate goal – like Pinocchio becoming a real boy. The original creative team met at Disney to discuss potential follow-ups for hours, but ultimately they concluded they couldn’t come up with a story that felt worthwhile.

I was so thrilled when Disney followed up Tangled with the short film Tangled Ever After in 2012! It was perfect – showing Rapunzel and Eugene’s wedding day just felt like a natural extension of their story, and a sweet little addition. I always hoped for a full sequel, but I understand the team felt it was hard to come up with a story idea big enough to justify a whole new movie. They wanted something truly compelling, and I respect that!

The filmmaker explained that although they love the characters, they only filmed a wedding scene because fans kept asking about it. Ultimately, they couldn’t find a compelling story that would naturally include a full wedding.

Tangled Was Given a 2D-Animated Series

While a direct follow-up movie wasn’t made, the story continued in other ways. A 55-minute animated TV movie, Tangled: Before Ever After, came out later, connecting the original film to Tangled Ever After. This then led to Tangled: The Series, a three-season animated show that aired on Disney Channel. Currently, Disney is also working on a live-action remake of Tangled.

The movie Tangled is a modern take on the classic story of Rapunzel. It follows a princess with incredibly long hair who escapes from a hidden tower with the help of a charming thief named Flynn Rider, and together they experience the world for the very first time. The film was a huge commercial success, earning almost $600 million globally, and it’s been well-received by critics, with an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Tangled is streaming on Disney+.
