A classic will soon be free to stream.
Stephen King is unmatched when it comes to horror writing. He’s incredibly productive and his work has been adapted into movies and TV shows more than most other authors. Some of his most famous books include The Shining, Pet Sematary, IT, Carrie, and Salem’s Lot. Many of his stories have recently been brought to life on screen, like Edgar Wright’s upcoming The Running Man (2025), but one movie from the 1990s is still considered one of his best adaptations.
Rob Reiner’s 1990 film, Misery, based on the work of Stephen King, remains a beloved thriller and will soon be available to stream on Tubi. Fans can watch it starting Friday, May 1st, on the free, ad-supported platform.
The movie Misery centers on author Paul Sheldon (James Caan) who, after a devastating car accident, is saved by Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates), a fan who becomes dangerously fixated on him. While the film holds up well over time, it’s especially known for its incredibly intense and unforgettable scene where a character is severely injured.
With a stellar 86% rating from critics and a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, Misery is considered one of the best movies based on a Stephen King story. The film, made for around $20 million, also performed well financially, earning $61.3 million in theaters.
Although audiences loved Misery, it didn’t receive much attention at the 1991 Oscars, earning only one nomination and a win for Kathy Bates as Best Actress. The film is still considered a defining moment in Bates’ career, which also includes well-known movies like Titanic (1997), Dolores Claiborne (1995), and The Blind Side (2009), as well as numerous television appearances.
The movie will soon be available on Tubi, telling the story of the shocking murder of Reiner and his wife on December 14, 2025. Reiner was well-known for adapting Stephen King’s stories, having previously directed the popular film Stand By Me (1986). He also directed other well-regarded movies like The Princess Bride (1987), When Harry Met Sally (1989), and A Few Good Men (1992).
With Misery now available on Tubi, the classic film has the potential to reach even more viewers. Tubi offers all its content for free with ads, which is appealing to many people now that other streaming platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, and Max are increasing their subscription costs.
Stephen King’s Misery is considered one of the best movies adapted from his work in the 1990s. While eleven of his stories were turned into films that decade, Misery, The Shawshank Redemption (1994), and The Green Mile (1999) consistently stand out as the most successful. Now that Misery is coming to Tubi, it will be even easier for audiences to enjoy this classic King adaptation.
