Japan will start testing humanoid robots to help with baggage handling at airports, with trials planned to begin in May 2026.
Japan Airlines and GMO AI & Robotics Trading are partnering to use robots that look and act like people to help with airport ground operations. These robots will load, unload, and move cargo.
Robot baggage handlers to be tested through 2028
Based on a report from TV Tokyo Business, a trial program will start in May 2026 to test robots in moving containers. The test is expected to continue until 2028.
So, they’re testing out robots at Haneda Airport in Tokyo, which is awesome! They’re going to run the tests until 2028 to see how well they actually work with real people and in a busy airport environment. I’m really curious to see what they can do!
These machines will take on tough physical tasks on the airport tarmac, like moving luggage and helping with ground operations. They’re designed to work with people, not replace them entirely.
The BBC reports that these robots can run for about two or three hours on a single charge.
This project aims to help reduce the workload on airport staff, as Japan faces a worsening shortage of workers.
Despite the appearance of automation and uniformity at airports, a lot of behind-the-scenes work still depends on people, and there’s a growing problem with not having enough workers, according to Tomohiro Uchida, president of GMO AI & Robotics.
If the trial goes well, it could be expanded to cover more jobs, like cleaning airplane cabins. Eventually, the airport hopes to use humanoid robots in many different areas of operation.
Robots are showing up more and more in both workplaces and leisure activities. Just last month, a human-like robot ran a half-marathon in Beijing, China, and set a new world record – finishing about six minutes faster than the top human runner.
