Windrose is a vast and lively game centered around pirates, rum, and treasure. But beware – these pirates are ruthless and won’t hesitate to attack, even if you’re just starting out!
What’s a pirate without a ship? Luckily, Windrose has plenty! You’ll find all sorts of vessels to make your seafaring dreams come true, from small boats to massive, impressive ships.
Let’s explore the different boats available in Windrose, including their variations, and discuss how to use them effectively in battle.
Ships and Variants

In the early access version of Windrose, you’ll find four main types of ships. But don’t worry, there are actually more than just four ships to play with!
The Ketch, Brig, and Frigate each come in three different versions. The version of ship you choose will depend on your preferred playstyle.
The standard ship is a good all-around option, offering a balance of health, storage space, and speed. However, the Brethren variant prioritizes cargo, sacrificing some speed. The Blackbeard variant, on the other hand, is faster and packs more firepower, but has less storage space.
If you enjoy exploring, gathering materials, and creating impressive bases without much fighting, the Brethren playstyle is likely a good fit. But as you progress through the story and become more familiar with ship combat, the Blackbeard variant usually becomes the stronger choice.
You can construct new ships and different types of ships by building a Wharf near the water’s edge. You’ll unlock the ability to build a Wharf during the quest called “How My Sea Adventure Began.”
Starting Boat
You get this small boat right away when you start playing Windrose, as part of the initial quests, so you’ve likely already seen it!
You’ll use this boat to explore nearby islands and finish some quests that will help you get a better one. Once you upgrade, though, you likely won’t need to use it much, except maybe as a quick way to escape danger if your main ship is destroyed!
The Ketch
You’ll likely get your Ketch within the first few hours of playing, and it will allow you to leave the small starting islands and begin exploring the vast open world!
To unlock this boat, you’ll have to complete the following quests:
- I Need a Bigger Boat
- Rescuing the Crew
Finishing these quests unlocks the Ketch, a faster boat that’s a significant upgrade from your dinghy. The Ketch will get you far in the game, but eventually you’ll need to find an even better vessel.
The Brig
The Brig is a significant upgrade that will help you progress further in Windrose’s main storyline. Here’s what you need to unlock it:
- 1000 Piastre
- Level 2 Brethren of the Coast
- Access to the Foothills
After donating a total of 100 favor to the Brethren, either at Tortuga or their main base, you can buy the blueprints for the Brig ship.
You can build your new ship at the Wharf located at your base. Here’s what you’ll need to construct the Brig:
- 80x Copper Ingot
- 120x Course Fabric
- 40x Linen
- 200x Nails
- 200x Wooden Planks
- 40x Rope
- 40x Timber
- 30x Shipwrights Tools
You can find all the necessary materials in the Coastal Islands and Foothills areas during the first two parts of the game. The Shipwright’s Tools are available for purchase from the Brethren of the Coast.
All versions of the building use the same number of resources. To switch between them, just break down your current one and rebuild it as a different version using the materials you get back.
The Frigate
If you were impressed by the Brig, prepare to be amazed! The Frigate is a massive ship equipped with the strongest cannons in the game. If you’re looking to control the seas, this is the ship for you.
To unlock the Frigate, you’ll first need the following:
- 3000 Piastre
- Level 4 Brethren of the Coast
- Access to the Cursed Swamps
This ship is very pricey, but its incredible power makes it worth every penny. To afford it, you’ll need to earn money by completing quests, exploring dungeons, or defeating other ships.

Next, you’ll need to reach level 4 with the Brethren, and that takes 1000 reputation points. You can earn reputation quickly by completing quests that reward letters of favour, or by defeating other ships at sea. As you earn money, you’ll also naturally gain these favour resources.
You’ll also need to beat this final challenge to open up the Cursed Swamps. These swamps contain the resources required to construct the Frigate.
You can reach the Cursed Swamps even before you defeat the second main boss, but you won’t be able to use anything you collect there until you do.
After you purchase a ship design from a Brethren Provisioner, head back to your Wharf with these materials:
- 120x Foothills Iron Ingot
- 300x Nails
- 240x Linen Fabric
- 320x Wooden Plank
- 80x Rope
- 80x Tarred Fabric
- 80x Tarred Planks
- 160x Timber
- 50x Shipwright’s Tools
It’s even pricier than the Brig, and collecting everything you need will take a while, but it’s ultimately worth the effort.
The Blackbeard Frigate is unique in that it’s the only ship capable of firing 36-Pounder cannons – the most powerful in the game. Although these cannons come with a trade-off – reduced health – they allow you to defeat opponents much faster, making for a more exciting experience.
