A recently married couple in India is divorcing because their pets – a cat, a dog, and a rabbit – constantly fought, creating a noticeable and uncomfortable atmosphere in their house.
This Indian couple is getting a lot of attention on social media because they’re separating over a disagreement about how their pets behave. It’s a rather unusual case of irreconcilable differences.
Records filed with the court, accessed by India Today’s Bhopal Desk, reveal that a couple married in December 2024 is seeking a divorce after only eight months of marriage. The couple has not been named in the documents.
According to the report, the pair first connected because they both loved animals – however, this common interest became a source of frustration after they started living together.
The husband, who lived in Bhopal, had a dog, a fish, and a rabbit as pets. His wife, originally from Uttar Pradesh, brought her cat when she moved in with him.

Their relationship went to the dogs — literally
Initially, things were calm, but problems soon arose between their pets. Court records feature statements from the wife, who explained that her husband’s dog “continuously barks at her cat, leaving it scared and stressed, sometimes even refusing to eat.”
The husband stated that his wife’s cat was responsible, explaining that it often sits near the fish tank and stares at the fish and has turned violent towards the dog multiple times. He claims this behavior is the reason for the incident.
According to other reports, problems between the couple began even before they moved in together. Bhaskar English notes that the husband asked his wife not to bring her cat when they got married, anticipating potential issues.
“Despite this, she brought her cat from her parental home,” he said.
Currently, the couple is navigating a divorce through family court, as tensions between their pets have reached an unmanageable point.

India Today received a statement from Shail Awasthi, the counselor handling their case, explaining that the couple is currently in marriage counseling to work through their issues. Awasthi indicated the counseling is aimed at helping them resolve their problems.
The couple has been married for just eight months and they both love animals. They’ve been arguing about their pets for a while now. They’ve already had one counselling session, and another is planned for October,” he said to the publication.
According to Awasthi, people often find friendship and comfort in pets, and sometimes even value these animal relationships more than those with other people, as he explained in a statement to NDTV.
Marriages fail when neither partner is willing to compromise. This highlights a concerning pattern: more and more people are approaching relationships casually, and some even think having pets can replace the connection they need with other humans.
