Be warned, this article reveals details about season 4 of Dark Winds. Titus Welliver, best known for his role in Bosch, is starring in a new four-season noir crime drama coming to Netflix that has received perfect ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. Bosch remains Welliver’s most popular and acclaimed TV show, and his portrayal of Harry Bosch in both Bosch and Bosch: Legacy has made the series a landmark in the crime drama genre.
Like all good TV shows, Bosch has come to an end. Bosch: Legacy wasn’t renewed after three seasons, and while Titus Welliver has continued his role in the Ballard spin-off, his time playing Harry Bosch is largely finished. After eight seasons across both Bosch and Bosch: Legacy, this career-defining role for Welliver is wrapping up, leaving him to search for his next big part.
Since Bosch: Legacy ended, Titus Welliver has stayed busy with plenty of new acting jobs. He’s already appeared in an episode of The Equalizer, and he’s scheduled to be in season 4 of The Night Agent, as well as the films The Westies, Killing Castro, and Hotel Tehran. However, his most significant role since Bosch, and the one that best captures the spirit of that show, is Dark Winds.
Titus Welliver Has Found His Perfect Bosch Replacement In Dark Winds
In season 4 of Dark Winds, Titus Welliver plays Dominic McNair, the season’s villain and head of a smuggling operation. Though McNair is in prison throughout the season, he directs his hitwoman, Irene Vaggan (played by Franka Potente), to eliminate or threaten people who might testify against him. Irene’s actions bring McNair into conflict with the show’s central characters, especially Navajo Tribal Police Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon).
Even though Lance Reddick’s character in Dark Winds is a law enforcement antagonist to Harry Bosch, the series effectively fills the void left by Bosch. Both shows are realistic crime dramas, anchored by fascinating and complex lead characters – Harry Bosch and Lieutenant Leaphorn – and supported by a strong ensemble cast. While Reddick isn’t the central figure in Dark Winds, the show offers a similar viewing experience to Bosch.
The show Dark Winds could offer Zachary Welliver a chance to be in a long-running series. Although plans for a fourth season of Dark Winds were interrupted, the ending strongly suggested a way for the character McNair to return. Leaphorn indicated that McNair would likely avoid punishment and benefit from a biased legal system, and the NTP lieutenant even challenged Welliver’s character to seek revenge once McNair is released.
Now that Dark Winds has been renewed for a fifth season, the show could revisit the storyline of Dominic McNair. This could mean a bigger role for Adam Welliver, who plays McNair, potentially making him a regular character. The next season might show McNair seeking payback against Leaphorn for what happened during the trial, and he could even become the show’s primary villain.
Since the death of BJ Vines, Dark Winds hasn’t had a central antagonist. Dominic McNair is now the most likely candidate: the actor playing him is well-respected and capable, the character has a clear motive for targeting Leaphorn, and his privileged background aligns with the show’s exploration of relevant themes. The actor has also expressed interest in returning for season 5, potentially establishing a recurring role similar to his work on Bosch.
Dark Winds Is Even Better Than Bosch As A Noir Crime Drama
While Dark Winds might seem like a successor to Bosch, it actually surpasses it in several areas. Bosch had its strong points, but the show’s quality varied quite a bit. The finale of Bosch: Legacy was particularly controversial and left many viewers disappointed. Beyond Titus Welliver’s performance as Harry Bosch, the characters didn’t always feel fully developed or relatable.
I’m a huge fan of Dark Winds, and honestly, it just does everything right. Unlike some other shows, it’s consistently amazing – it actually has a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes for all four seasons! But it’s not just the main story; the supporting characters, like Jim Chee and Bernadette Manuelito, are truly fantastic. They’re some of the most captivating, well-developed, and brilliantly acted characters I’ve seen in any crime drama.
Zahn McClarnon’s portrayal of Joe Leaphorn is just as strong as Titus Welliver’s performance as Harry Bosch. Both characters are similar – they’re flawed, face difficult moral choices, and have complicated personal lives. However, Leaphorn’s story is particularly engaging, focusing on his attempts to reconnect with his wife, Emma, and his grief over the loss of his son. In the third season of Dark Winds, McClarnon delivers a deeply moving performance, and in some scenes, he surpasses even Welliver’s work.
Netflix Releases Dark Winds Season 4 In July 2026
Good news for those who enjoy Titus Welliver and the show Bosch: Dark Winds is becoming easier to watch. Dark Winds originally airs on AMC and its streaming service, AMC+. Because AMC+ isn’t as well-known as other streamers, many viewers prefer to wait for the show to become available on Netflix, which usually happens a few months later. As of right now, the first three seasons of Dark Winds are streaming on Netflix.
While season 4 of Dark Winds initially streamed only on AMC+, it will be available on Netflix starting in early July – just three months after its April finale. This wider release will allow many more people to watch the new season, especially fans of Bosch who might be looking for another compelling mystery series.
