Warning! This article contains minor spoilers for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord episodes 7 and 8.
The newest Star Wars show on Disney+ has introduced a character who could perfectly fill the role previously held by Ahsoka Tano. Originally appearing in the 2008 Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie as a backstory addition, Ahsoka Tano has become a central figure in the Star Wars universe. She’s been a memorable part of several popular shows, including Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, The Mandalorian, and her own live-action series, Ahsoka.
While many Jedi survived Order 66 and have appeared in recent Star Wars stories – like Gungi, Grogu from The Mandalorian, Cal Kestis from Star Wars Jedi, and Barriss Offee from The Clone Wars – Ahsoka stands out. She possesses a special combination of compassion, playfulness, ingenuity, inner peace, and resilience. This is largely due to her unusual bond with her Master, and these qualities help her not only survive the Empire but also become a vital asset to the Rebellion, as shown in The Clone Wars and the Ahsoka series.
The latest animated Star Wars series, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, expands the story by introducing new Jedi who survived the devastating Order 66. Twi’lek Padawan Devon Izara and her Master, Eeko-Dio Daki, are in hiding on the planet Janix when the Empire arrives, searching for Darth Maul – Darth Sidious’s primary target. Though some believe Devon may eventually become Darth Talon, Maul’s officially recognized dark side apprentice, she’s currently establishing herself as a skilled, clever, and compassionate young Jedi. Her character shares many similarities with Ahsoka Tano from The Clone Wars.
Maul – Shadow Lord’s Devon Izara Is One Of Star Wars’ Best New Order 66 Survivors
It’s natural to feel sympathy for anyone who lived through Order 66. Experiencing the destruction of the Jedi Order would be incredibly traumatic. This is especially true for Devon Izara, who we first meet in Maul – Shadow Lord as a Jedi struggling to find her place in a chaotic galaxy and understand her connection to the Force. Like Ahsoka before her departure from the Jedi Order in the final episodes of The Clone Wars, Devon questions whether the Jedi’s principles are still relevant – or even right – when faced with such widespread suffering and evil.
Despite lingering questions about her path, Devon consistently makes the right choices. In episodes 7 and 8 of Shadow Lord, she demonstrates impressive skills, reminiscent of Ahsoka Tano, effortlessly defeating stormtroopers, rescuing her friend Rylee from an Imperial ship, and even expertly piloting a stolen speeder – a performance Anakin Skywalker would admire. Like Ahsoka, she’s incredibly brave, and it’s exciting to watch her fight with both her Master and Maul. Among the many characters who survived Order 66, Devon stands out as one of the most compelling. Her future in Star Wars looks promising, but what happens next will likely depend on Maul’s actions.
Devon’s Relationship With Maul Echoes Ahsoka’s Dynamic With The Former Sith Lord
The final episodes of The Clone Wars feature a confrontation between Ahsoka Tano and Darth Maul on Mandalore. Before their memorable duel, Maul tries to recruit Ahsoka as his apprentice, predicting the Jedi Order’s impending collapse. Ahsoka declines, and though she defeats him in battle, she’s forced to team up with Maul temporarily when Palpatine issues Order 66, throwing the galaxy into turmoil.
Although Maul offered Ahsoka a deal out of desperation, he recognized a unique quality in her – a willingness to question authority and think for herself, something he hadn’t seen in most Jedi. Now, he seems to see that same independent spirit in Devon. He’s intensely focused on her, constantly complimenting her skills, and he’s cleverly using the Empire’s attack on Janix to force her into an alliance with him.
Even though Devon and Ahsoka have a lot in common, Devon’s path could be very different. Ahsoka never seemed close to turning to the dark side, even after leaving the Jedi and witnessing Anakin’s fall. But Devon’s future is uncertain. While she’s deeply loyal to her Master, his death could push her towards darkness. Plus, her anger towards the Empire is increasing, fueled by convincing—and unsettling—arguments Maul has made against the Jedi.
It’s likely there’s a connection between the character Devon and Darth Talon, a Sith Lord from older Star Wars stories. Reportedly, George Lucas considered bringing Darth Talon back in the new sequel trilogy, potentially as Maul’s apprentice. With the renewal of the Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord series, anything is possible. For now, Devon is a strong continuation of Ahsoka Tano’s legacy, embodying the ideal of a self-reliant, independent, and heroic Jedi.
