It’s not always the main character who has the most impressive powers. Often, they serve as the emotional center of the story, while supporting characters get the more exciting abilities. This doesn’t mean the protagonist is poorly developed or weak – many of the best anime heroes are like this. It’s this dynamic that actually makes them compelling.
While the main character is typically who we follow most closely, supporting characters in many action anime often have more interesting and creative powers. The hero is usually likable and memorable, but their abilities can seem basic when compared to the unique and versatile skills of the other characters.
Yuji Itadori Spends Too Much of Jujutsu Kaisen Just Hitting Opponents Really Hard
I’ve been watching Jujutsu Kaisen and it’s incredible. It’s a series where the strongest character, Gojo, completely breaks the rules of fighting. The powers are really creative – Megumi manipulates shadows to summon things, and Mahito’s abilities are disturbing both to look at and to think about. Even something as simple as clapping becomes a weapon in the hands of Todo, which is hilarious and effective! What’s really cool is that even characters who aren’t the main focus often have unique and memorable techniques. And Yuji? He mostly just punches and kicks, but with unbelievable power.
While Jujutsu Kaisen presents this well, Yuji stands out as a remarkably athletic and emotionally honest protagonist – his straightforward nature actually makes his struggles feel more impactful. However, his abilities aren’t as captivating or unique compared to other characters. He often seems to be the only one who hasn’t realized how creative cursed techniques are supposed to be.
Atsushi Nakajima’s Tiger Transformation Is Too Basic for Bungou Stray Dogs
Atsushi is a strong protagonist in Bungou Stray Dogs. He’s relatable and works well amidst the anime’s wild events, as his insecurities and struggles provide a grounded, human element to the story. However, his ability – transforming into a tiger – doesn’t feel as creative or unique compared to the powers of other characters, though it does connect to his personal battles with fear and the will to survive.
Unlike many other series, Bungou Stray Dogs features abilities that are clever and highly specialized. For example, Dazai can cancel out other powers simply by touching someone. The powers in the show often reveal a lot about a character’s personality. In contrast, Atsushi’s ability, while useful, often feels generic and lacks the same impact and creativity.
Yusuke Urameshi’s Spirit Gun Is Just a Really Good Blast Attack
Yusuke is a compelling character in Yu Yu Hakusho because he’s genuine and wears his heart on his sleeve, making him instantly likable. However, his Spirit Gun ability, while recognizable thanks to Yusuke himself, isn’t as captivating as the powers possessed by his friends. It’s a straightforward attack that’s easy to use in battles, but it pales in comparison to the more unique and interesting abilities around him in the series.
Hiei obtains a powerful new ability called the Dragon of the Darkness Flame, which is both visually impressive and intimidating. Kurama excels in battle by using cunning strategies, plant-based attacks, and traps – a level of tactical thinking that Yusuke doesn’t often demonstrate. Yusuke’s own power is solid, but it’s rather direct compared to his teammates, who each have more unique and colorful fighting styles. This creates an odd situation where Yusuke is the most popular character, despite not having the most fascinating ability.
Natsu Dragneel’s Fire Dragon Slayer Magic Feels Too One-Note in Fairy Tail
Natsu’s fire magic perfectly suits his personality – it’s powerful, straightforward, and he typically overcomes obstacles by facing them head-on. It also gives Fairy Tail a clear and recognizable look for its main character. However, compared to the diverse and imaginative magic abilities of other characters, Natsu’s power feels a bit simple. This is largely because the rest of the cast has much more versatile and creative magical skills.
Lucy’s magic allows her to summon a diverse group of spirits, each with unique traits and abilities. Erza can instantly change her weapons, armor, and fighting style, offering incredible versatility. Even Mirajane’s transformations feel surprisingly different each time. Natsu, however, largely focuses on making his fire-powered punches even stronger. While Natsu’s enthusiasm makes this work, it’s not typically his power itself that excites viewers – it’s how he uses it.
Izuku Midoriya’s Super Strength Is a Tough Sell in a World Full of Wild Quirks
The anime My Hero Academia features a universe filled with unique superpowers, often flashy and attention-grabbing. Characters can do incredible things like control shadows, generate explosions, nullify other powers with a glance, divide their bodies, or completely transform. Deku, the main character, gains super strength, which is certainly helpful and a well-known ability. However, compared to the wildly creative powers of others in his world, it feels a bit straightforward.
While One For All becomes more complex as the story progresses, Deku’s initial appeal stems from how he utilizes his power, rather than the power itself being particularly fascinating. His battles are compelling because of his determination, cleverness, and willingness to push his body to its limits, not because of spectacular or innovative moves. This makes Deku a strong character despite having a fairly straightforward ability.
Gon Freecss Somehow Has the Plainest Signature Move
The power system in Hunter x Hunter is exceptionally well-designed, allowing for unique and imaginative abilities. Unlike many action-focused anime, Nen lets characters develop powers that are both strategic and reflect their individual personalities. While many abilities are complex, Gon’s power, Jajanken (a rock-paper-scissors game), is surprisingly fitting. It reflects his simple, honest nature, making it a strangely perfect match for his character.
Gon feels overshadowed because his friends have much more impressive abilities. Killua fights with incredibly fast and powerful electricity, Kurapika uses chains for precise and frightening attacks, and Hisoka’s Bungee Gum is a uniquely versatile power that fans love. Gon’s main attack, while effective, is a simple, enhanced punch that feels a little basic compared to their creative powers. It’s not that it’s bad, just surprisingly straightforward.
Tanjiro Kamado’s Breathing Style Never Feels Distinct
In Demon Slayer, Tanjiro’s Water Breathing, and eventually Sun Breathing, makes his fighting style elegant and visually appealing. However, while enjoyable to watch, it doesn’t quite capture the imagination like some of the other characters. Demon Slayer features other fighters who are more striking; for example, Zenitsu’s incredibly fast attacks are based on a clear contrast between his fear and his incredible speed.
Inosuke’s unique and fierce fighting style brings a completely different vibe to every fight. Plus, the Hashira often appear with techniques that immediately feel more polished or thrilling compared to Tanjiro’s. Because Tanjiro is the main character, his powers need to be dependable and versatile enough to drive the story forward. Sometimes, though, his abilities can seem a bit basic or standard.
