Something unusual is happening with Disney Plus and Star Wars. The animated series Maul: Shadow Lord has quickly become the most popular and critically acclaimed Star Wars show ever. It’s visually stunning, with exciting action and a gripping story. What’s even more surprising is that another Star Wars series is also gaining a lot of viewers.
Even though it was canceled after only one season, The Acolyte is surprisingly popular on Disney Plus right now, recently returning to the top 10 two years after its finale. It appears that after initial negative reviews, viewers are now discovering what many consider to be one of the most compelling Star Wars stories in nearly five decades. Unfortunately, a second season seems unlikely as a live-action show. However, there might be alternative options for continuing the story.
The Acolyte Has An Important Story To Tell
Long before the events of the films, the first season of The Acolyte introduced a key element to the Star Wars story. The season concluded with the captivating character known as the Stranger convincing Osha to turn to the dark side. However, the show’s creator, Leslye Headland, had a larger story in mind. It was revealed that the Stranger, also known as Qimir, was actually the very first Knight of Ren – the same Sith order that Kylo Ren would eventually become a part of.
Additionally, The Acolyte explored the mystical side of Star Wars with its focus on witchcraft. While the Nightsisters of Dathomir have appeared in other animated series and are featured in Ahsoka, the Brendok coven in The Acolyte presented a unique take on Force-wielding magic users. Unfortunately, the show’s early cancellation means we won’t see this storyline fully developed.
Now that viewers are discovering and enjoying The Acolyte, Lucasfilm and Disney have a chance to correct their initial decision and let the show’s creator, Leslye Headland, complete her vision. While starting another live-action series might be too expensive, The Acolyte could easily continue as an animated show.
Animation May Be The Best Bet For Star Wars TV And The Acolyte
Comparing the first seasons of Star Wars: The Clone Wars to Maul: Shadow Lord is like comparing a beginner’s sketch to a masterpiece. This isn’t to diminish the hard work of the talented artists who created Clone Wars; they did their best with the technology available then. However, computer animation has improved dramatically over the past twenty years, and Lucasfilm’s animators are now capable of incredible things. Plus, with live-action Star Wars shows reportedly costing hundreds of millions of dollars—much more than animated series—they have a greater chance of being considered successful.
The animated series Maul: Shadow Lord successfully creates a similar atmosphere to The Acolyte. Star Wars animated shows have always been comfortable exploring darker themes – The Clone Wars actually portrays Anakin’s fall to the dark side more effectively than the films, and Rebels and Bad Batch both featured very intense and somber moments. Maul: Shadow Lord stands out as a particularly nuanced and morally gray story within the Star Wars universe. While it doesn’t reach the same level of maturity as Andor, it’s willing to delve into complex issues when the story demands it.
It’s clear that Maul: Shadow Lord is a hit. According to Disney Plus’s Top 10 list, it’s currently being watched more than Daredevil: Born Again in the US. This demonstrates a strong audience for animated Star Wars content—people are really enjoying it! It appears that focusing on animated series could be a smart direction for the franchise, and The Acolyte would be a good show to see if this strategy continues to work.
