GZDoom, a fan-made engine that updates the original Doom games, has become popular as a base for both modifications and entirely new games. One standout title built on GZDoom is Ashes, a fantastic free-to-play first-person shooter set in a world after a disaster. The developers are currently working on a large update that will add two new areas to explore. While that update will take some time, they’ve just released a smaller campaign called Ashes: Blackwater to keep players entertained in the meantime.
This game is a spin-off that explores an alternate timeline where the player character failed to stop the General’s group two years prior. Ashes: Blackwater takes place in a single, large location made up of six interconnected maps. You’ll play as a scavenger struggling to survive in a post-nuclear war America.
Similar to the classic Doom II, Ashes: Blackwater delivers fast-action combat but features expansive, modernly designed levels. The game adds depth with RPG-style elements and the ability to upgrade your weapons. Everything you see and hear is brand new, making it a fresh experience.
The project is remarkably polished and delivers a gaming experience comparable to many popular modern retro shooters.
