Scarlett Johansson’s Underseen Sci-Fi Horror Movie Is Officially Releasing On Netflix 13 Years Later

Scarlett Johansson will land on Netflix soon with a haunting sci-fi movie.

Scarlett Johansson is a hugely popular and successful actress, known for both critical acclaim and box office hits. She’s become a household name, and audiences eagerly anticipate her films. Many fans recognize her for her role as Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where she showcased her talent in action-packed, science fiction stories. Beyond Marvel, she’s starred in popular sci-fi films like Jurassic World Rebirth, Lucy, and Her. She has another science fiction movie coming out on Netflix soon.

Netflix is adding a bunch of new movies on May 1st, including Scarlett Johansson’s sci-fi film Under the Skin, according to a report from What’s on Netflix. Under the Skin first came out in US theaters in 2014, so it’s been over 13 years! Other titles joining Netflix that day are 13 Going on 30, Eat Pray Love, Jennifer’s Body, Schindler’s List, and more.

The movie Under the Skin features Scarlett Johansson as an alien who disguises herself as a woman to attract men. She then traps and harvests them, leaving only their skin behind. While a unique sci-fi horror film, it wasn’t a commercial success, earning only $7.5 million worldwide. With a reported budget of $13.3 million (according to Box Office Mojo), the film would have needed to gross between $26.6 and $33.3 million in theaters just to cover its costs.

Despite not performing well in theaters, the sci-fi horror film Under the Skin, starring Scarlett Johansson, was praised by critics. It currently holds an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, earning it the ‘Certified Fresh’ label. However, audiences had a different reaction, giving it a score of just 55%. This suggests Under the Skin is a divisive film, making its potential success after its Netflix release on May 1st uncertain.

Besides Scarlett Johansson, Adam Pearson is the most recognizable actor in Under the Skin. Pearson recently had a significant role in the 2024 film A Different Man, which earned Sebastian Stan – a fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe star and future cast member in The Batman – Part II – a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy.

With Scarlett Johansson’s sci-fi film Lucy recently becoming a hit on Netflix – it ranked as the 9th most-watched movie in the US after its release last month – the arrival of another Johansson sci-fi film, Under the Skin, could mean a second chance for the movie. Although Under the Skin didn’t do well in theaters, Lucy’s success suggests it might find a new audience on the streaming service.
