A gardener became popular online after trying an experiment to see if burying Taco Bell food could help plants grow. The results weren’t what they hoped for.
A TikTok creator named Epic Gardening conducted an experiment where they buried three Cheesy Gordita Crunches under tomato plants to test if the fast food could be used as fertilizer. The video of this unique gardening approach has become popular online, with many people sharing their reactions.
The person who buried the tacos prepared each one uniquely. One taco was buried intact, another was cut into pieces, and the last was finely ground to help it break down faster.
Control plant outperforms Taco Bell test
The experiment aimed to see if chopping food into smaller bits would help plants absorb more nutrients. As the video creator explained, smaller pieces have more surface area, which should speed up decomposition and provide better nourishment for the plants.
Although the tomato plant growing over a buried Cheesy Gordita Crunch looked the biggest after several months, it didn’t actually produce the most tomatoes when it was time to harvest.
The plants that weren’t fed Cheesy Gordita Crunches produced 15 pounds of tomatoes – almost twice as much as the plants that were.
These findings support previous work by the researcher, indicating that plant nutrients are best absorbed after food waste has completely broken down.
This isn’t the first April the Cheesy Gordita Crunch from Taco Bell has become a viral sensation – previously, a player of the Tomodachi Life game dedicated several hours to recreating the meal within the game itself.
