Some games become true classics, selling millions of copies and attracting new fans to the genre. However, for every hugely popular title like Final Fantasy 7 and Baldur’s Gate 3, many other excellent games don’t receive the recognition they deserve.
Everything is different now, because we’re finally highlighting RPGs that should be much more popular. These games haven’t gotten the attention they deserve, often overshadowed by bigger titles. They’re unique and creative RPGs that, while ambitious, may have been overlooked by many players.
Look Outside Is A Strong Contender For 2025’s Best Indie Game
Released in 2025, Look Outside is the newest game here and continues to receive updates. Despite being overshadowed by the release of Hollow Knight: Silksong, it was still considered one of the best indie games of that year and is worth checking out.
In the RPG Look Outside, you play a man stuck in his apartment as a terrifying, Lovecraftian creature appears in the sky. Gazing at it transforms people into monsters, and you’re running low on supplies. You must venture into the monster-infested building to find food, weapons, and potential allies while fighting off your former neighbors. The game features stunning and frightening sprite art that vividly depicts the horrors within. Look Outside is a unique RPG that deserves more attention, and is well worth checking out if you’re looking for something different.
Bahamut Lagoon Needed Hard-Working Fans To Bring It Overseas
It’s simple to see why Bahamut Lagoon isn’t as well-known as other classic games. It originally came out on the SNES but was never officially translated into English. Most players have only experienced it through a fan-made translation found online. Even in Japan, it’s only been re-released once, and that was as a digital download for the Wii and Wii U.
Bahamut Lagoon is a strategy-based role-playing game set in a world of floating islands. An invading empire forces the hero and their friends to take to the skies on dragons, battling alongside their powerful dragon companions. A key feature of Bahamut Lagoon is its deep dragon-raising system; players can evolve their dragons by feeding them items, customizing them to fit their preferred playstyle. It’s considered a classic RPG, and many fans wish Square Enix would create a modern update.
Fear & Hunger 2: Termina Is A Bizarre and Disturbing Modern Classic
Both Fear & Hunger games are known for being incredibly challenging, much like the Dark Souls series, and take place in dark, unsettling worlds. However, Fear & Hunger 2: Termina is generally considered easier to pick up for new players, as it has fewer ways to unexpectedly derail your progress.
In Fear & Hunger 2: Termina, you choose one of eight travelers on a train that’s suddenly halted in a treacherous village. You’re caught in the middle of the Festival of Termina, a three-day fight for survival. To win, you’ll need to find allies, learn powerful magic, and overcome increasingly terrifying enemies.
Vampire: The Masquerade – Redemption Shouldn’t Be Stuck In Bloodlines’ Shadow
When people think of video games based on the Vampire: The Masquerade tabletop game, Bloodlines is usually the first one mentioned. It’s praised for its compelling story and characters, which really capture the atmosphere of the World of Darkness role-playing game. However, many Bloodlines fans don’t realize it wasn’t the first video game adaptation of Vampire: The Masquerade – that honor actually belongs to Redemption.
Beginning in the medieval period, Redemption follows Christof, a knight who becomes a vampire after falling in love with a nun. This sets off a centuries-spanning story that leads to Christof waking up in the present day, still searching for his lost love, who is now held captive by a rival vampire. While not quite as strong as Bloodlines, Redemption is a fantastic game that deserves more recognition.
Shin Megami Tensei 4: Apocalypse Is The Best Game In Its Franchise
The Shin Megami Tensei series gained a large following outside of Japan, largely thanks to Persona, a popular spin-off. While Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne has been updated for modern consoles, the next main game remains exclusive to the Nintendo 3DS, as does its sequel, Shin Megami Tensei 4: Apocalypse.
Okay, so this game is set in a seriously cool world where all the myths are real – demons, gods, the whole shebang! But Tokyo? It’s gone, buried underground. You play as a demon hunter from Tokyo who gets killed on his very first job. Talk about a bad start! Luckily, one of the gods brings you back to life, and you’re tasked with hunting down other gods who are causing trouble. It sounds like there’s a huge war brewing between the gods, and you get caught right in the middle, having to pick a side. Plus, you’re basically living on borrowed time, so you really need to make the most of your second chance!
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance Is An Overlooked GBA Gem
The first Final Fantasy Tactics game is considered the best of the series, even surpassing its sequels. While Final Fantasy Tactics Advance for the Game Boy Advance is a fantastic game, it often gets overshadowed by the original story and characters of Ramza Beoulve in the world of Ivalice.
Final Fantasy Tactics follows a group of children who find themselves in the magical world of Ivalice. This land is governed by powerful Judges who control every battle. The main character must unravel the mysteries of Ivalice, as things aren’t what they seem, and the reality behind their adventure is far more sinister than expected. The game’s combat system is a clever improvement over the original Final Fantasy Tactics, demanding players adapt their tactics quickly based on the Judges’ unpredictable rulings.
Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth Suffered Due To Being A 3DS Exclusive
The Persona series has seen several crossovers, bringing together characters from different games in new and unexpected ways – often in genres like rhythm or fighting games. The Persona Q games are RPGs similar to the Etrian Odyssey series, focusing on exploring dungeons from a first-person perspective with a strong emphasis on combat and discovery.
Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth brings together characters from Persona 3, 4, and 5, trapping them in a bizarre world filled with dungeons themed after movies. The game didn’t get much attention because it came out right before the Nintendo Switch became popular, leading players to move on. Hopefully, Atlus will update both Persona Q games with a remaster or remake, as they are great games that deserve a wider audience.
Dragon Quest 9 Needed A Remake More Than Dragon Quest 1-3
Square Enix has been actively updating and releasing older games to a wider, international audience. It’s surprising then, that one of the most highly-regarded games in the series hasn’t been re-released, and remains exclusive to the original Nintendo DS version from 2009.
In Dragon Quest 9: Sentinels of the Starry Skies, players take on the role of a hero tasked with helping fallen angels, known as Celestrains, return to their home in the sky. This involves gathering companions and searching for powerful relics called Fyggs. The game boasts a flexible character class system that encourages players to try different builds, which is useful for exploring the many dungeons and finding top-tier gear. It’s surprising that Dragon Quest 9 hasn’t been re-released or ported to new platforms yet, but Square Enix should consider doing so.
Z.H.P. Unlosing Ranger VS Darkdeath Evilman Might Be Nippon Ichi’s Best Game
Nippon Ichi is famous for the Disgaea series, which are strategy role-playing games packed with content. There’s a Disgaea spin-off that’s just as good as the main games, but it doesn’t get much attention, probably because of its unusual title: Z.H.P. Unlosing Ranger vs Darkdeath Evilman is a bit of a mouthful!
In Z.H.P., you play a new superhero who is initially defeated by the main villain. However, they are brought back to life by a mysterious figure called Super Baby, who allows them to train and improve their skills in challenging dungeons before attempting a rematch. Z.H.P. shares similarities with the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series, but offers greater freedom in customizing your hero and building up your base between missions. A unique aspect of the game is that permanent character death is a real possibility, something rarely seen in games.
Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore Is The Best Switch Game That No One Played
It’s frustrating that more people haven’t discovered this game. It’s a unique blend of the Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei series, presented as a Japanese drama about teenagers striving for stardom. While the original release on the Wii U didn’t do well, a remastered version with extra content was released on the Switch, but it still didn’t get the attention it deserved.
Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore is a fantastic RPG for the Nintendo Switch. It features exciting battles, a wealth of sidequests reminiscent of the Persona series, and characters from Fire Emblem with abilities similar to the Stands in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. If you’re a fan of Atlus games, you absolutely shouldn’t miss this one!
