As a huge film buff, I’m already getting excited for Christopher Nolan‘s new movie, which is coming out this July! But it sounds like we’re also getting another adaptation of The Odyssey soon, though early reports suggest it’s going to be a pretty different take on the classic story compared to what Nolan’s planning.
A musical version of Homer’s The Odyssey, called Epic, is now in development. The project will be an animated musical, and is a collaboration between renowned producer Jerry Bruckheimer (known for Top Gun and Pirates of the Caribbean), Epic creator Jorge Rivera-Herrans, and Atlantic Music Group president Kevin Weaver. Chad Oman from Jerry Bruckheimer Films is also producing.
Homer’s Epic Story Becomes More Popular Than Ever
I’m so excited about this project! I heard it’s going to be pitched to studios and streaming services really soon – like, as early as next week! It all started when the creator, Rivera-Herrans, began working on a musical version of The Odyssey back in college. Then, during the pandemic in 2021, he started sharing his progress on TikTok, which was awesome. By 2022, he was releasing these incredible musical sagas himself. And get this – his self-released EPs actually topped the iTunes charts! At one point, he had nine out of the top ten spots on the soundtrack charts, which is just unbelievable!
The incredibly popular song “Epic” has garnered over four billion streams and seven billion views in short-form videos worldwide. This widespread success led to a record deal with Weaver’s Atlantic, allowing for physical copies and merchandise to be created, which generated millions in profit. It was only natural that a movie adaptation would follow, and the pre-existing working relationship between producers Bruckheimer and Weaver – who previously collaborated on “F1 The Album” – made it possible.
The Odyssey Is Expected to Be a Major Hit
Nolan’s new film, The Odyssey, is currently performing well in theaters, and its anticipated success is likely to draw more interest to the original Epic poem. Written and directed by Nolan, the movie is based on Homer’s classic story. Like many of Nolan’s films, it features a talented cast, with Matt Damon playing the role of Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, and detailing his long journey home after the Trojan War.
The cast of The Odyssey is filled with stars. Anne Hathaway plays Penelope, Odysseus’s wife, and Tom Holland is their son, Telemachus. Other notable actors include Zendaya as the goddess Athena, Jon Bernthal as the Spartan king Menelaus, and Himseh Patel as Odysseus’s loyal companion, Eurylochus. John Leguizamo portrays Odysseus’s servant Eumaeus, while Mia Goth plays Melantho, a maid in Odysseus and Penelope’s household. Benny Safdie takes on the role of Agamemnon, the Achaean commander. Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, and Elliot Page also join the impressive ensemble.
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey will be on July 17, 2026.
