Sony announced a significant achievement in artificial intelligence when its robot, Ace, defeated professional table tennis players in a recent competition.
Ace, created by Sony AI, is the first computer system that can play against and compete with top-level human players in a real-world setting.
Okay, so most table tennis robots before this one were just about keeping the ball in play, you know, practicing simple rallies. But Ace was different. They actually tested it in real matches, following all the official ITTF rules! And get this – it won three out of five games against some seriously good players. Then, in later tests, it even beat professional players! It wasn’t just a practice tool; it could actually compete.
Table tennis robot goes pro
According to Peter Dürr, Director of Sony AI and lead of the Ace project, their research demonstrates that a self-operating robot can successfully compete in sports, even reacting and making decisions as quickly as—or faster than—humans in a real-world setting.
This new research shows how physical AI robots can handle tasks that require quick, back-and-forth interaction, marking a major advance in building robots that can work effectively with people in real-time situations.
Ace uses fast cameras, special vision sensors, and artificial intelligence to follow the ball’s movement – its position, spin, and path – as it happens. According to Sony, this allows the machine to return over 75% of shots, even those with heavy spin, and respond to tricky situations like balls hitting the net.

Ace continued to improve, winning against several professional players and demonstrating faster shots and more intense rallies. Sony believes this quick learning and rapid response ability suggests potential beyond the sport of table tennis.
As a gamer, honestly, this is huge! Peter Stone from Sony AI just said that they’ve built an AI that can actually understand what’s happening around it, think quickly, and react perfectly in a really complicated, fast-moving world. It’s the first time an AI has been able to do all that effectively, and it feels like a real game-changer for things like better game AI and, well, a lot more!
When AI reaches the point where it can perform tasks as skillfully as a human expert, it will unlock a range of practical uses that weren’t possible before.
This year, artificial intelligence is making waves in surprising ways. Beyond robots playing table tennis, AI is now being used to analyze people’s tongues and recommend food and drinks. There’s even a completely AI-powered school—without any teachers—that costs $55,000 to attend.
