A man received a two-year jail sentence for scaling the Las Vegas Sphere, causing an estimated $100,000 in damage. He reportedly told police he wouldn’t be held accountable for his actions.
Las Vegas’ Sphere has become a global sensation, captivating visitors with its stunning exterior displays and impressive interior configurations for events.
People have tried to climb the Sphere without permission several times, including an incident involving Maison Des Champs in 2024. The 26-year-old, known as the ‘Pro-life Spiderman,’ climbed the 366-foot-tall building on February 7th and was arrested that same day.
Des Champs, who broadcast the climb online, told police he believes his lawyers will help him avoid consequences, just as they have with similar actions before.
Maison Des Champs jailed after climbing Las Vegas Sphere
On Monday, April 19th, 26-year-old Des Champs was sentenced to 45 days in jail. In addition to the jail time, he received a suspended sentence of 364 days and a year of probation, meaning he’ll be released from jail on June 4th, but must follow the terms of his probation afterwards, according to the New York Post.
In addition, the climber is required to pay $77,270.32 to the Sphere Entertainment Complex as compensation for damages.
So, I heard this guy was originally hit with some serious charges – like, over $5,000 in property damage and planning to mess stuff up. But it looks like he ended up pleading guilty to a lesser charge, basically admitting he acted really recklessly and didn’t care if people or things got hurt.

Des Champs allegedly damaged the Sphere by $100,000 while climbing it, claiming he did so to collect donations for a homeless pregnant woman named Isabel.
He initially said he was “falsely accused of breaking lights” during the climb.
Others have tried to climb the Sphere before. For example, professional climber Alex Honnold successfully climbed it in April.
Des Champs said that the Sphere “stole” his idea with Honnold’s climb too.

Alex Honnold famously free climbed the Taipei 101 building for a Netflix project in January, and reports suggest he earned only $500,000 for the feat. Popular YouTuber MrBeast has stated he would have paid Honnold a significantly higher amount to perform the climb for his own channel in the future.
