The Dexter series has been popular for two decades and continues to draw audiences. Starring Michael C. Hall, the show originally ran for eight seasons, took a break for eight years, and then returned in 2021 with Dexter: New Blood.
Compared to the original series, New Blood had a much darker and more focused storyline, centering primarily on Dexter himself instead of a large group of characters. The show also moved to a completely new location – the snowy landscapes of upstate New York – a stark contrast to the sunny setting of Miami in the original series.
Following that came Dexter: Resurrection, which viewers generally liked more than New Blood. It felt more like the original Dexter series in terms of mood and style. The first season of Resurrection laid the groundwork for future seasons, hinting at the arrival of the New York Ripper as the main villain in season 2.
Showtime has already announced who plays the New York Ripper in the upcoming season of Resurrection: Brian Cox. While some were surprised by this early reveal during filming in New York City, it actually follows a pattern established in previous seasons of Dexter, and is likely a good strategic move.
Dexter Has Never Been A Mystery Show
While often described as a crime drama, Dexter focused more on investigations than traditional mysteries. Only seasons 1 and 8 truly revolved around figuring out ‘who did it,’ keeping both the characters and viewers in the dark. The first season’s mystery was effective, with the reveal that Rudy Cooper, Deb’s boyfriend, was the Ice Truck Killer. However, this approach didn’t work as well in season 8, which is widely considered a decline in the show’s overall quality.
Typically, throughout most of the Dexter series, viewers learn who the main villain is fairly quickly. For instance, in Season 4, we meet John Lithgow’s character, the Trinity Killer, almost immediately, before Dexter even knows who he is. Similarly, Season 5 introduces us to one killer, Boyd Fowler, right away, and it’s clear from the start that Johnny Lee Miller’s character is also a murderer.
Let me tell you, what really worked about Dexter wasn’t trying to guess ‘whodunnit’ alongside the characters. The show truly shined when we watched Dexter and his team piece together the puzzle. It was far more exciting to follow their investigation than to try and stay ahead of them. In fact, the tension was often heightened because we, the audience, frequently knew more than Dexter did – though he always caught up pretty quickly. It wasn’t about the mystery itself, it was about how Dexter solved it.
The first season featured a unique mystery deeply connected to Dexter’s childhood. But after that, the show consistently found success with storylines focused on investigations. Season 2 is a prime example – even though it flipped the script by making Dexter the target of the investigation instead of a mysterious figure, it remains one of the show’s strongest seasons, proving how effective these types of plots are.
The Trinity Killer Paves The Way
Many fans consider Season 4 to be the strongest in the whole series, including the later seasons New Blood, Resurrection, and the prequel Original Sin. The main villain for these twelve episodes was the Trinity Killer, who posed a serious challenge to Dexter throughout the season. Interestingly, revealing his identity early on actually strengthens the story.
As a huge fan, I was so thrilled with how well-received that season was! It was amazing seeing him pop up in both the New Blood and Resurrection flashbacks, and I even heard they were thinking about a spin-off focused on his story! What really made the Trinity Killer so captivating, for me, was that we knew who he was. It let us really get inside his head, and that’s what made him such a great villain when facing off against Dexter. Unlike some of the other killers on the show, like the Ice Truck Killer, Trinity was always out in the open for us to see, and I think that made him even more terrifying.
This development deepened Dexter’s storyline for the season. He attempted to emulate Trinity, but eventually understood how truly monstrous Trinity was and that he didn’t want to be like him. Unfortunately, Dexter realizes this too late, failing to stop Trinity when he could have. This inaction leads to the tragic death of his wife, Rita, and the way Trinity is portrayed makes Rita’s death particularly shocking.
Trinity’s effectiveness as a villain relies on the significant amount of screen time she receives, something a mystery-focused season wouldn’t have allowed. The season’s impact, particularly the emotional weight of Rita’s death, wouldn’t have been nearly as strong if it had been structured differently.
Revealing The Ripper’s Identity Sets Up His Rivalry With Dexter Perfectly
By revealing the New York Ripper’s identity before the premiere of season 2, the show effectively establishes a strong rivalry for Dexter. This killer was subtly hinted at throughout season 1 of Resurrection, starting with Leon Prater’s early mention, which was later echoed by other characters like Detective Wallace over the course of the season.
The real strength of Dexter has always been in exploring the intense clashes between its characters – like the dynamic between Trinity and Dexter in season four – and that’s where the show should concentrate, rather than getting bogged down in trying to figure out who the killer really is. It’s these confrontations that have made the series, and the character of Dexter, so compelling.
Fans are especially excited about Brian Cox joining the new season. He recently earned praise for his role in HBO’s hit show Succession, and now he’s taking on a very different challenge as part of the Dexter universe. Recent photos from the set show his character in a wheelchair, adding to the mystery surrounding the upcoming Dexter: Resurrection season.
