Invincible Season 4 ending explained: What is Thragg’s disturbing plan for Earth?

Season 4 of Invincible concluded with a shocking cliffhanger: Thragg issued a devastating demand to Mark concerning the fate of Earth, and the situation is only going to get more difficult. Be warned – spoilers follow!

The first three seasons of Prime Video’s animated superhero show have been leading to the arrival of the fearsome Viltrum Empire, and now, creator Robert Kirkman is finally showcasing Grand Regent Thragg as the series’ main villain.

Man, that fight with Thragg was insane. He almost took Oliver’s jaw off with one punch, and then just went to town on Mark, Nolan, and the whole Coalition of Planets. Invincible versus Conquest was tough, sure, but Thragg is a whole different beast – a seriously evil villain.

The fourth season of Invincible concludes with a less explosive, more thoughtful confrontation between Mark and Thragg following Viltrum’s defeat. Thragg presents Mark with a difficult choice, but his ultimate goal for Earth remains unclear. Here’s a breakdown of what happened in the season finale.

Thragg wants to breed Viltrumites with humans at the end of Invincible Season 4

With Viltrum gone and the Viltrumite Empire shrinking, Thragg has a surprising plan revealed at the end of Invincible Season 4: he wants to create hybrid offspring by breeding Viltrumites with humans. The season mostly focuses on Mark dealing with the aftermath and emotional toll of his difficult battle, and Thragg only presents his offer to Mark in the very last moments.

He’s been repeatedly haunted by terrifying flashbacks of Thragg attacking Earth and brutally killing everyone he cares about. Mark finally realizes he can’t handle it alone and confides in Cecil, asking for help – a clear sign of how much he’s still struggling after the war.

In the episode’s final moments, Mark takes to the skies to think, and unexpectedly encounters Thragg—but this time, it’s not an illusion. Thragg has actually arrived on Earth. He then makes a chilling offer to Mark: he’ll spare the planet if Mark allows the remaining Viltrumites to settle and reproduce here.

Okay, so Thragg was basically saying Mark proves humans can make strong half-Viltrumites, and that’s how the Viltrumite Empire could come back. For a second, I thought Mark was going to refuse and we’d get another huge battle, but he actually agreed to Thragg’s deal in the end! It was a relief, honestly, but also kinda scary to think about what that means for the future.

The fourth season of Invincible ends on a devastating note: Thragg has defeated Mark, both in battle and emotionally. Now, he’s planning a centuries-long strategy to rebuild the Viltrum Empire.

The season ends with a glimpse of the remaining Viltrumites living amongst humans, suggesting they’re already looking for partners to begin a breeding program. It’s a pretty unsettling thought.

Invincible Season 4 post-credits gives Allen the Alien an improved version of the Scourge Virus

The ending of Invincible Season 4 wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Allen the Alien. After Thragg defeated Thaedus, Seth Rogen’s one-eyed alien character has been given a new role: he’s now in charge of the Coalition of Planets until a new leader is chosen in an election.

In the final moments of the show, the character receives a hidden message from Thaedus, recorded before the war in case of his death. This message leads him to a secret lab where he discovers Thaedus was actually the one developing the Scourge Virus – the same virus that nearly destroyed the planet Viltrum.

This dangerous new version of the virus might also kill people, making the already intense Viltrumite war even more frightening.

Thragg’s deal is right out of the comics, and it sets up Invincible Season 5 in a big way

Thragg’s scheme to rebuild the Viltrum Empire closely follows the events of Invincible comic #77. The main change is that in the comics, Mark’s father, Omni-Man, is present when Thragg makes his proposal. Many believe Omni-Man’s support is what makes Mark seriously consider Thragg’s offer.

Thragg believes they’re contributing to his overall scheme – any children they might have will increase the Viltrumite population.

Despite the fact that you destroyed our home planet, we believe you hold the key to our survival. You represent our future, the form we need to take to continue as a people. This is simply the way it has to be.
